all he said was "she used to be hot". He never said he aborted his mission to get in bed with her. Just a subjective statement outside her music that's all.

"no one calls Mariah fat or Tina Turner old"

lol where have you been

"sure does, since the dawn of Elvis Presley's career , not to mention the rabid fan girls and Boybands. I vividly remember the Ricky martin craze. looks/sex appeal has always been "the factor" for mainstream audiences."

not the point, at least not mine. I'm saying that sputnikmusic (not the mainstream audience, although I would expand this to include most of the online music criticism community) talks about women's attractiveness FAR more than they talk about men's attractiveness.

"all he said was "she used to be hot". He never said he aborted his mission to get in bed with her. Just a subjective statement outside her music that's all."

"she used to be hot" = "i used to be inclined to want to have sex with her". regardless, it's still extremely demeaning and completely irrelevant to the music. why not just say something about the music? there's plenty to be said. but the sputnikmusic community is too sexist to focus on that when it would rather talk about the women, which creates a terrible environment for anyone who doesn't want to talk about how attractive they think women are. imagine if every single thread talking about your favorite male artist was 50%+ comments about how hot they think he is. this isn't the case, which is good. but it is for female artists.

and i'm not claiming that you or other users ONLY think/talk about women in music as sexual objects but I will confidently say that you do it in very inappropriate ways and far too much.

@musicinabox what is your basis for this? gaga has always been a performer but not in a way that demands male gaze, sort of a bowie of synthpop. and taylor even less so (she started off at what, 16?). what about them makes you think their main component is sex appeal? it's certainly not for the millions of straight women or gay men who are fans of their music (not to discount straight men who enjoy their music, but just saying that they obviously enjoy it for other reasons). if your answer is "they wear outfits that turn me on" you're not thinking about this very hard

@mifzal for real though do you really think this:

"She never was hot, but she's super talented so I'm not going to complain about her fame"

isn't demeaning and sexist? first off, you're just calling a person unattractive, which is just a jerk move regardless of which gender you're doing it to. and then you're implying that if she wasn't talented and she WAS hot it would be ok, that female success, to you, should be related in some way to how attractive they are. is the problem here not obvious?

@musicallychallenged I said I don't complain about her fame because she is talented. Read that a few more times on loop ,maybe you'll see how unsexist it really is. You are just looking for something to argue.

yeah sure cuz its the presence of the sex appeal that makes me want to listen to her or take whatever she has to offer productively. It might be also because what is "sexist" and what is not keeps changing from one idiot to another.

again, that's cause they only see women as sex objects. they think it's everyone else's fault that they can't take women seriously
