I am absolutely ashamed that I had this at a 2.5. The album is amazing.

Visions of LA is one of my fave "short acoustic songs on not otherwise acoustic albums" songs

Rough on the first listen, ngl. And even with me being a big post rock fan

Yeah this isn’t your typical post rock which crescendoes throughout. Songs stay pretty mellow, but from the first note I am spellbound.

Lmao i'm not especially here for post rock guys, get a grip. It's just that this is their ambient/post rock album and i was expecting a lot more. This doesn't hold a candle to Souvlaki so far for me

I mean, this is ambient

Souvlaki is shoegaze/post rock

The attitude is completely different, so fair enough!

Eh, this has ambient moments but it’s much more post-rock and ambient pop.

yh Souvlaki is a pop album and this was written out of their obsession with min techno (but obvs panned out more post-rock)

Makes a lot more sense if you look at it within the progression Souv-> 5 EP -> this, but too many people sleep on 5 and I feel this gets more of an anomalous rep than it deserves as such

5 EP is indeed very very essential

5 EP is an worthwhile listen for how unique it is in their discog but I don't love it, probably their weakest EP aside from Morningrise. I'd say most fans only really need "In Mind" from it.

Weakest EP is Holding Our Breath by a significant margin - don't see any competition there. 5's twinkly take on SAW-era Aphex Twin is borderline perf

Hm Holding Our Breath has "Shine" which is a top 5 Slowdive track for me. Self-titled is obvi the best EP, Outside Your Room doesn't really count imo

5 and Holding Our Breath are both inessential, maybe? Hmm dunno I only really listen the S/T EP these days. Apparently I like Morningrise but who knows why if not association?

I'm a bad fan

listening to 5 for the first time, blows me away

a great document about how their sound transformed from souvlaki to pyg

missing you is exactly how aphex twin sounded those days, can't believe my ears
