Now that you mention it, I do think some sexuality would work well for her style tbh

"closer is so fucking good tho" [2]
Easily her best song

yea I think it's her best song, something truly haunting in that melody

Acting as if there isn't a substantial aesthetic delta between Fiona and Julien.

I needn't explain the direction that runs either.

I brought her up to demonstrate that you can tackle depression in a lively/humorous/sensual way, Baker takes herself too seriously.

big disparity in both musicianship and songwriting between the two as well.. precocious and pensive is a thin thread to tie someone to fiona apple.. this isn't near on the level..

Yeah just because they're both female songwriters with depressive themes doesn't make them comparable in any way.

If the hype is warranted then her art should withstand comparisons to Fiona Apple, Elliott Smith and other renowned singer/songwriters.

You remind me of my film teacher who thinks that action films can only be good of they constantly mock themselves

gonna have to spin this more but it's easily the best on here imo and rivals "Rejoice" for my favorite song of hers

With regard to the album being sexless and lacking humour, I do agree somewhat. To be quite honest, though, I appreciate and prefer that the darkness feels unrelenting. I think it makes the closer - which resolves most of the issues brought up in this album, as well as Sprained Ankle, in its final moments - all the more impactful.
That said, I do think there are such moments on the album, and it'd be interesting to see her explore them in greater detail. I'd argue 'Even', for example, gets close to this - it sounds dark and bitter, but the scene she paints of trading blows with her friend is quite humorous, and the vocal pattern itself is rather biting. It's sad, of course, but I think she pokes fun at how dramatic the situation is. Punching holes in motel walls. Fireworks. A black eye. "Isn't that what you want? For me to be miserable like you / Well, brother, you're about to get your wish."
Similarly, there's sarcasm in the title of 'Happy to be Here', and despite its melodramatic framing, I think she pokes similar fun at herself on 'Hurt Less'. I'm aware that me having to nitpick for such moments kind of helps your case, though, haha, and I agree for the most part. I just think its... "unadulteration" (or whatever) is endearing for the most part and is part of her charm - it also helps with the religious themes, I think.

yes yes helps a lot with the religious themes, as her upbringing has probably taught her to forbid non-marital sex as well as her own sexuality so the whole argument that she's just not having fun for her age is a bit silly considering her perspective. as someone that is struggling with my own faith and views on sex it's definitely refreshing to see this kind of point of view.

I just feel maybe she could speak more of those views then?

yeah for sure but the implied is more impactful for me rather than the explicit.

That's fair man but I probably would never have read into it that way without having similar experiences or Blush's diligent hypotheses haha

that's the fun with lyrics tho! the more you listen, the more you unpack and knowing her life story / background definitely helps
