Starless goes loco in this thread but although we disagree about the worst songs on this (Arkhipov is actually decent) I agree with his general point.
Onion sounds like he appreciates the side of Converge that isn't their modus operandi, or what their legacy is (currently) about... wanting them to slow it down & make all the tracks 'stand out' so he can decipher them. I understand that some people dislike cacophonous mayhem, or at least prefer a balanced approach but to me making their music more accessible to the masses isn't going to satisfy the core fans.
And having said that his criticism of AtF is unfounded as they DO mix it up, it's a varied release especially by Converge standards.
I'm not against the more accessible approach, AWLWLB kills this record from beginning to end & I get the impression that record helped a lot of people get into the band. This sounds like (mainly) the uninspired & watered-down leftovers from that album.

Arkhipov Calm irked me when I first heard it. Still doesn't sit right with me.
And I agree with mostly everything else you say, Demon.

I don't think the band cares about any of those two things, though. They've been pretty clear that they make music to satisfy themselves according to their own tastes. Which is a healthier approach that I wish more bands had tbh.

I wouldn't call this accessible just because they take things in a post metal/post hardcore direction

Yea satisfying your core fans shouldn’t really matter if you’re making the music you want to make. When bands make albums with the intent of satisfying the fans, it often comes across as really forced and not nearly as good as what theyre trying to imitate

Maybe they wanted to satisfy themselves by becoming more mainstream...

At no point did I say they SHOULD do anything, was only talking about the result

making their music more accessible
it was more about that I felt you implied that they wrote the music with this as a stated intention, but maybe I misunderstood you

Yeah maybe that was unclear, I wasn’t meaning for that to come across as their intention, or implying they had any intention in that regard. The end result was probably more accessible but I’m sure they didn’t go into it thinking ‘hey, let’s appeal to a wider/new audience’
