New one's hit or miss, probably just listen to a few tracks again. Struggle to get through the full album with one listen. Lyrics are quite repetitive, but then again a lot of their back catalogue is as well.

Yeah the new album is sounding like one of their weakest efforts sadly, but haven’t heard every track yet
Still think this one is underrated tho

singles were probably the best. leaf pile was really cool.
and idk i feel like their older efforts were lyrically more charming/charismatic now brian sounds forced/repetitive.
bus beat is a good example. probably would have been a great song if it didn't almost make me cringe. i still like it though...i think

also wayyyy too much pointless sounding spoken word here. he's not saying anything interesting enough and his voice doesn't really perform so it sounds like it's there to fill space

no clue what you people are hearing, half way through and it's got a lot more bite than this

I love this, but yeah, the new one is sounding great so far.

yano considering most songs by this band grow on me eventually and I already think it's better than this album, i'm pretty excited for listen 2.
a couple highlights i remember:
end of jerk and the truth
change up in the hard way
all of leaf pile

also they shouldve fully commit to a callback in camouflage
...HOW DID I GET HERE...but no "where the hell am i?: :/
i think that's still my favorite atm

Agreed, all those are great moments. I love Leaf Pile's callbacks to Vacation Town. It's so sad.
|
| |
I don't hear any callback to Vacation Town on that song
|

I like this album (despite it being my least favourite of theirs) but from this album I definitely feel that these guys are aging but not necessarily maturing
|
| |
By this album I mean the new one, not Going Grey

on my third listen and it rules, some very subtle & great moments, weakest track is Bus Beat for sure but it's not really an offender
that stretch from Montgomery to New Song is so good

"I definitely feel that these guys are aging but not necessarily maturing"
you kidding? I found it to showcase a lot of growth and maturity for them, unlike some moments on here for example

"I don't hear any callback to Vacation Town on that song" -- Really? Whole thing feels like a big dark reference to / continuation of it. Most obvious callback is the "I wanna beee".
There are references to other songs, too, obviously. Song is perfect.

Idk that feels like a big reach to me giving the song a third listen

Fair enough. Sounds pretty clear to me that it uses the same melodic phrasing before jumping into the song, and that the lyrics are referencing it.
