That's very true. I am obsessed with the trilogy and really really dig Golden Age so I have been aching for a return to form for like a decade now, but now that this was released...eh, I kind of just want him to do something that comes more naturally. This seems a bit forced in his older age. Really dug it on first listen but holy shit this is wearing off fast.

See, I'm weird on that too. I was not a fan of Golden Age, that was when Manson started slipping to me. Mind you, Holywood came out when I was in high school, so I think Golden Age just didn't match my evolving tastes. But Antichrist, Mechanical, and Holywood will always have a special place in my heart. Hell, even Portrait does, I was very fond of his approach to the lyrics with different topics, clever wordplay, etc etc. It didn't specifically hone in on the religion aspect. And you're more than right when you say the albums feel forced, I think that's my main qualm with it.

Golden Age was definitely a bit of a slip and a major step down from Holy Wood, but I still love it and actually grew to like it more with age now that I get the tongue in cheek/ 1930s thing they were going for.

But yeah, the trilogy is definitely by far his best - Portrait reminds me of my younger, liberty spikes/wearing all black with rings and necklaces days.

I always thought it suspicious that he was heavy into/with Deeta Von Teese, who is a burlesque dancer, then turns around with a Vaudeville themed album? I call shenanigans.

"You can just stop after Holywood" I mean I dig Golden Age even though it is a significant drop in quality, but basically also [2]

Well, I'm sure we can all agree to pretend Eat Me, Drink Me/The High End Of Low/Born Villain don't even exist. In hindsight, I would have rather had a huge gap of nothing between The Golden Age Of Grotesque and The Pale Emperor.

Our back and forth has made me curious to go back into Grotesque and see how it holds up. It's been almost a decade since I really gave it a chance, and I figured my tastes have changed since then. I'm a quarter into it, and it's hit or miss so far. My favorite part so far is the fact that John 5 had a bit more input.

Yeah it's hit or miss - the quality is not up to par but I still enjoy even the cheesier parts of it

Honestly I think Golden Age was his worst by far. It's a vapid album both lyrically and instrumentally. Which I guess he was sort of going for but intentions don't make the music good.

Eat Me, Drink Me is really underappreciated.

High End Of Low is a bit better than Golden Age for me but it's painfully average overall.

Born Villain is decent. It's really raw which is definitely a step up from the overproduced and "by the numbers" feeling I get from Golden Age and High End. Maybe that's why I like Eat Me, Drink Me too. At least he was trying something different and it didn't sound like a parody of himself.

Well I am not feeling this at all, but again last time I heard a full Manson album was in the 90s.

lol I for one really enjoyed High End of Low, because I was listening to a lot of music that inspired Brian for that album. Plus, I listened to it like 3-4 years after it came out. Born Villain was cool too, because of the post-punk vibe, but it grew off me pretty quickly.

High End and Born Villain are both middling albums but still get too much hate I think.

Yeah... no. Great review Gonzo, you make a lot of valid points and obviously have a deeper knowledge of his music evolution than me but personally I feel this is just Manson in onanism mode.
