Yeah, this was better than EoS, but still not great imo. I think what I treasured about Mastodon did not survive their post-CTS evolution. There's just so much clean-vocal, clean-guitar cheesiness for me now. The glorious album concepts and narratives were traded in for shit like Show Yourself and Curl of the Burl

Funny trend I've noticed since CTS actually. Whenever Mastodon drop something new, my experience of said release is the same. I love the first track (here, on EoS, on OMRTS, on The Hunter)... but that's sorta it. I feel these releases never return to that initial rush of energy. They open with a bang, and then go straight into radio-friendly pop metal whateverisms for the rest of the runtime. I listen through to the very end, out of loyalty and the vain hope that it'll return to the glory of Sultan's Curse / Tread Lightly etc... but it never happens, and I'm left with a bad taste in my mouth. rip

Could not disagree harder. The Hunter is such a fucking bore fest after 4 albums that were continuously progressing without losing its balls.

Hunter is a dumpster fire. Blood Mountain has a loose and goofy D&D concept but I for one enjoy that aspect of it. Also there are some killer songs on that record, which work just as well out of context, if said context bothers you so much.

Yeah it's not like it's a single song where you have to listen to it all at once. I listen to Blood and Thunder all of the time on its own.

musically cts is far better than the hunter but calling mastodon's concept for it glorious is lol

Hunter was great. For some reason I loved that album.

I feel like Mastodon accomplishes radio metal much better than other albums, and I feel like they have also slowly shifted from being entirely a metal band, especially with this release. I think to many people judged them with the preconceived notion that they are still working under the context of "being metal". Now, I won't lie and say they haven't fallen from grace, but idk if they are nearly the hot garbage people make them out to be.
|
| |
Well, they are not.
And they are just 4 dudes having fun making the music they want to do.
Not many bands can claim to have the same founding members for so long making so much great music. They have my utmost respect, el mastodonte.

Luca I'm not from the states so I have idea how it works there. I have always been worried if I drove in the US someone will shoot me for cutting them off in traffic or something.
I happen to live near what is considered to be up there with the worst roads in my city.

Lmao no one will kill you in the states, man - the news blows shit out of proportion

yeah i never really approach the first four as fully realized concept albums.. they're thematic, sure; fire, water, earth, sky! but i can mix the tracks up and they stand just as strong on their own
