I never got why bands should change their name after a huge sonic shift tbh

Without the "Mastodon" branding, this would make the band zero money

It's not like they're getting rich with this EP or their records. It's also music by the same people, looking at their music from a different angle and at a different age - of course it's different. And who knows what's "Mastodon" and what not, if not the band themselves?
I'm not trying to say their newer stuff is as good as the older stuff or anything, but this whole argument never made sense to me. Same for Opeth

It makes much more sense to argue this for Opeth than for Mastodon tbh

It never makes sense. The artists decide the direction of their sound. Stop listening if you don't dig.

Damnnnn
But for real, I still listen to new Opeth in hopes that they will release something I will like again. It doesn't have to be metal, but I still cling to the belief that I might like SOMETHING new they release because I like them all so much as musicians and their earlier work is some of my favorite in music.

I get that and I do the same with certain bands, but it's not like that makes a difference if the artist want to do their thing. Aren't there any retro bands aiming to copy Opeth's older style of any worth?

I feel like if they were going to change their style, the least they could have done was contact me to see if I was cool with it but whatever

Agreed. They're just being plain rude man.

If anyone has a problem with these guys or Opeth changing their sound, what would they say about Ulver? Oh, they wouldn’t care. Is it only bands that reach certain levels of mainstream popularity or something? Dumb.

Funnily enough that’s not a bad example, some people still can’t get over the fact they moved away from Britpop, very strange people but they do exist. Post The Bends would be more accurate though. Guess they should’ve changed their name too, I like Toasterbottom.

Agreed. And Kayo Dot should change their name for every album. Pop Point? Tod Oyak? OK Period?
