They could've pushed their sound further. I think they regressed from a certain potential. To your credit, yes, they do sound like two different bands haha
And I know you're not referring to me, but it's not so much the heaviness in of itself, but the way it sounded and the particular way it was employed previously.

@GetLow - Deep, layered dense sound...I think you can tell that. You just hate it...no harm in that

I mean I try to rate stuff as objectively as possible; I have some stuff highly rated that I don't personally like (I don't "hate" the album, by the way). I just don't see anything particularly good about this.

To much of an identity change for old fans to actually keep following the band without questioning, or see their expectations defrauded...I just wanted to add to your and Jade's analysis that, as a late fan of their work, is possible to like both things.

Subjective ratings are where it's at my man

Rating stuff subjectively is so bad. I'll look through people's ratings and see 3/4 of their shit rated 4+, and it's like, how do I even take anything this person says seriously?

yeah man. Obectivity its a good thing. But don't forget you ve got a heart to :P I didn't assumed you hated this by your rating...bad assumption eitherway.

No worries, triple D. I admire your passion for this band and wish that I felt the same about them.

"how do I even take anything this person says seriously?"
just ask the guy.
f.e. I can explain objectively and subjectively all my ratings.
I have unconditional passion for 2 albums from this band. True. How should i rate them? lol

what's the point in rating objectively (if you even can)?
i mean ratings aren't all that important but idk why, say, an album you really like would get a 3 because it's "objectively" not very good.

"I have unconditional passion for 2 albums from this band. True. How should i rate them? lol"
At the end of the day, there's no right or wrong way to rate things. The website doesn't have a rulebook. It all just depends on what each individual wants to do.
"i mean ratings aren't all that important but idk why, say, an album you really like would get a 3 because it's "objectively" not very good."
I do this often, and I have no problem with doing this. Like I said above in the comment, it's all a matter of what each individual wants to do. But I mean, don't be mad if you have a bunch of crappy albums with high ratings and someone calls you out for it.

I rate like 90% subjectively and 10% objectively lmao

i couldn't care less if someone called me out for giving a "crappy album" a high rating and i'd hope other people feel the same. music is subjective.
i just don't really understand the logic but you do you my dude

No offense, but I've noticed, lol.

@Mars "They could've pushed their sound further." If you're talking about what thy did on Exoplanet I totally agree. They could've explored more that potential. It would've been fuckin awesome!
@GetLow I use this ratings to keep track of the music I like and/or liked. But once again if someone calls out for a "crappy" album i can explain why its good for me and a lot of other users.

If every one were to rate "objectively" (let's pretend its even possible to rate music objectively) it wouldn't be necessary for people to rate, because everyone would rate the same, therefore all the other statistics (AVG included) would become unnecessary. X)X)
Also the actual albums could come with the rating printed already (depending if its the Redux version or not)

There isn't such thing as universal objectivity in terms of art. Objectivity when it comes to art still widely varies from person to person.

I was just having fun. I get you getlow about trying to be objective.
"I have some stuff highly rated that I don't personally like" i do that to. Its not your thing but you can tell that is objectively good. But when you like something you should rate accordingly to your liking.

You contradicted yourself dude. Objectivity varying from person to person is what subjectivity is. The base definition of objectivity involves the complete removal of bias, ultimately impartial to the studied object or concept. Technically speaking, objectivity is universal, and all opinions from an objective standpoint are uniform in nature. It's to prevent the intrusion of external influences in conclusions.

Just came here to say I, personally, mostly listen to music I rly enjoy, which my ratings prob reflect. But this isn't in any way the "correct" way to do it, & is just because I don't always practice patience w/ things that don't resonate with me. It's fun to be an archivist digging through catacombs of discographies, for sure, but it's also a pretty quick, sure-fire way to get inspired, by something at least.
I think album ratings can be largely misunderstood as a concept, which is a big part of the problem. See them as somewhat arbitrary, at times, attempts to numerically convey the worth of a piece of art.
But I also like rating things, and it definitely satisfies my detail-oriented self at times. By even trying to decide on an appropriate rating for an album, you think through the criteria that matters the most to you, implying some towards of impending resolution.
And then you go may out for a walk or take a trip to the gym and listen to the album again, & in the new context it makes more sense. Depending on a variety of factors -- the headphones/earbuds you use, your listening environment, your emotional state of mind, how focused and/or mindful you are at the present moment -- all of these things coalesce into these diff. multitudes of experiences with a single piece of art. All about recontextualization, my bbs
