colour me owned because: i don't actually hate this album, and on the contrary quite enjoy it. will wonders never cease?
i love this review obvi, but
Because although previous Godspeed releases have spun sprawling apocalyptic narratives imbued with pathos, this new record engenders a last-ditch effort to prevent the end of the world from occurring, as if it plays out before both F#A# and Lift Your Skinny Fists… in this universe’s chronology. The quieter passages here are less resigned than they are scheming (the beginning of Fam / Famine immediately springs to mind) and the set-ups extend further than the pay-offs; the band work their way around motifs and themes before going ahead with the execution. The first two Anthem’s For No State -- all maudlin guitars dovetailing into maudlin violins -- are named as such because they dwell in that transitory space between life and death.
not only does this seem infelicitous to what actually occurs, bt seems to contradict other features of the review, though it is written gorgeously

the climaxes in Fam/Famine and Bosses Hang sound like the climaxes of "wont' get fool again" and "bubba O'reilly" respectively lmao
another GYBE release another second listen which makes it seem laughable although the opening track and segments of Anthem of No State are really interesting texturally, hmm

I've always wanted to hear this band integrate more bagpipes so this was really nice and the addition of some brass was a pleasant surprise. Think this is the band's most logical progression from Asunder, combining its strong drone aspects while melding it with the noiser, rockier sound of Allelujah

It is a good album but at first listen it is a little underwhelming.

It's probably their most subtle, and it's different enough to surprise at times. I'm glad they changed up the formula of interspersing two monster avant-garde rock pieces with drone sections, cause that would've gotten formulaic if it happened in the third album in a row.

Honestly, this sounds like everything they've been doing since their return, but with way less flavor. Boring climaxes and meandering passages. Basically everything i dislike about the genre distilled into one albun

For having a pretty riled up press statement and even a list of demands, this is probably the most subdued sounding album they've done.

If I go clang, clang, rat-a-tat rat-a-tat. Shwoosh, clang, thwack, whomp add violins and no structure while calling my 32 minute song 'Zion whores burn at the witch master generals orders' will you 5 it?
