System is amazing and I really like Nobody Else, Day I Die, and Walk it Back too. Born to Beg starts kind of conventional but the ending is so good. Last 5 songs are all tops.

I really didn’t know Dessner could play like that, the rest of their discog gives no indication of that level of smoothness

i'd estimate every member in this band are far more technically proficient players than they show in their songs
for every lars ulrich that's in way over their head, there's probably like 20 musicians playing for successful bands who are "holding back" because that's not what their music really calls for

it’s not the technical proficiency that surprises me, it’s just how smooth and perfectly expressive it is, although I guess when it comes to soloing those lines become a bit blurred

compared to something like Wasp Nest which is comparatively much more sloppy, granted that song came out long before this did. or maybe he’s not even playing on that one idk. completely different style too obviously

I mean they do have one of the best drummers in the game so
also I believe both Dessners have music degrees

well it’s not a drum solo, fair point about them being classically trained though. you wouldn’t think that translates to amazing solos but it actually makes a lot of sense if you think about it

Hadn't listened to this album in a while cause it brings back some memories, it's hit as a truck

revisiting Day I Die (which i had in my head as a boilerplate National 'rock' song) and it's almost comical how much more inspired it sounds compared to anything they've done following this album. the pace, the colourful arrangement + blend of electronic tones, even the lyrics. band is sadness

Day I Die is great yea, reminds me a lot of Interpol

I wish I could band together with some likeminded users and have a good “shitting on Lars Ulrich’s drumming ability” session just one good time on this site.

imma need everyone to post a 10-15 second clip of them drumming on their desk to assess their ability

the current day Natty experience would likely improve this in retrospect, silver linings and all that

This is actually great without any qualifiers, though.

this has 5 of their dullest good-era tracks + one cut and dry meme song, so not quite
rest is all essential though

cut born to beg and turtleneck and this might be their best album

^Replace Born to Beg with Empire Line and I agree, this would be perfect.
