Huh, I prefer the openers on all the previous 5 albums tbh.

The more time passes, the more I realize the title track here is one of the most important National songs ever, the whole closing run of this is nuts but that track especially helps solidify this album as yet another classic in their catalog.

I could never get into the t/t. Favorite National opener is probably Secret Meeting or Terrible Love. Cardinal Song is awesome too. Fav closer is either Lucky You or Mr November.

Yeah, I never "got" the closer here either. It always seems entirely forgettable for me, despite a lot of the rest of this album being classic-tier The National

Yeah I definitely love this album, but there are a few other songs like the t/t that leave me kindof cold.

I'm with you guys about the titled track. Not so big on it

It’d feel a lot more important if the follow up album wasn’t so shitty

T/T is one of their very best songs

Yeah I would have been ok with a hiatus after this album rather than IAETF.

Of all The National's albums, this one took the longest to grow on me. Every time I return to it, the highs get higher. Not sure it'll ever jump up from a 4.0 but I think I originally had it at a 3.0. Track scores out of ten:
• Nobody Else Will Be There 9
• Day I Die 8
• Walk It Back 7
• The System Only Dreams in Total Darkness 9
• Born to Beg 7
• Turtleneck 6
• Empire Line 7
• I'll Still Destroy You 9
• Guilty Party 9
• Carin at the Liquor Store 7
• Dark Side of the Gym 8
• Sleep Well Beast 7

I'll Still Destroy You is one of their best songs and I will die on that hill

Need to revisit a bit, Guilty Party was my original standout. Excited to see them at Pitchfork this summer, saw them at Bonnaroo last year, but I just don't think it was the right venue between all the EDM my GF was bringing me to

Guilty Party and System are probably my Top 2 but I'll Still Destroy You and Nobody Else are up there.
Remove 'Turtleneck' completely and the album improves imo.
