The audience awareness is why the new record falls flat for me. Sprained Ankle felt genuine in its intimacy precisely because she didn't know anyone would care or connect. "Rejoice" is a howl in the dark with no one listening, a moment that can't be replicated at will. She tries over and over on the new album to deliver that Big Moment, but it all reads as contrived because it's obviously to please an audience. The super upfront mixing of her vocals is also uncomfortable, aiming for intimacy but feeling like desperation. She bought into her own hype and released fan service, "performed authenticity" is a bitter but accurate way of putting it.



Turns out the worst thing that could happen to Baker is realizing that someone is listening.

Lucid I agree but I don't think anything she does is disingenuous, it just sounds like the attention made her uncomfortable and unsure of herself
