"I love that a site moderator can post two paragraphs deliberately framing Jesse Lacey's abuse of responsibility and sexual misconduct as a PR problem and inconvenience to fans' perceptions of the Brand New narrative"
"If they halfarse it via the PR guilty-fan service Sowing described"
Ah, shit. I didn't mean to come across this way - certainly it's not merely a PR issue, and obviously no charity could undo or even lessen what's been done. I was looking at it from the perspective of a band like Pinegrove, which basically did what I described. Granted, the offenses of the bands' frontmen are not comparable, so it was probably a short-sighted suggestion on my part. Didn't feel the need for the upfront aggression and insinuation of malice, but I get the annoyance/perceived narrative-scripting. Like many fans who love their music, I just wish the guys would do something to own up to what happened (the FB 'apology' definitely doesn't count in my eyes) and try to give the victims closure. Regardless, I didn't mean to cause any offense, gaze over his transgressions in favor of the music, et al. My bad.

yea this is my primary issue with most famous ppl that get accused of sexual misconduct. like i'm willing to accept that you've changed in all the years since the incident and move past it if you genuinely accept responsibility for your actions and take some positive steps proportional to the severity of your misconduct towards fixing yourself and/or engaging with the larger issue. but there are surprisingly few instances of those ppl going "i did this, it was terrible, here's what i'm doing to address the issue". instead it's mostly just wishy-washy bs like jesse's statement or "i categorically these allegations".

Sorry for the late reply - only just seen this! This seems reasonable and clarifies the tone of your earlier comments a good deal. Apologies if any of the frustration in my post seemed antagonistic or singularly directed at you - I'm tired of watching this site acting on the verge of active denial to the issues surrounding this band, but it's unfair to pin this on any individual person, and I appreciate that your post was in good faith

I can understand this for sure. It's not just this site though (check out their reddit page if you really want your head to explode). The shitty reality is that 40-something, married-with-kids Lacey isn't going to put himself in prison for manipulation that occurred two decades, or half of his life, ago...especially when he claims to have cleaned up his act. Not sure where the next course of action even lies, and I mean this sincerely because I'm not a legal professional. Do the victims have to produce concrete evidence (which would be next to impossible considering the shelf life of the technology that any proof would likely exist on)? Does law enforcement get involved and find a way to dig it up? Does any recourse rest solely in Jesse's hands (if so, wtf)? Right now, I feel like the entire situation is some sort of uncomfortable stale mate, where everyone knows he was guilty but we also know nothing is going to come out of it. I think it's fair to separate the art from the artist, but it's also fair for others to call continued patronage of the band disgusting. Nobody really wins here, least of all the victims who get zero closure after having put themselves out there.

I know I already said it earlier in this thread, but yeah exactly this right here. I don’t know what the statute of limitations is for something like this, but throwin himself in jail does absolutely nothing to make this situation better. Dismantling a family that is doing well, taking a father away from his kids, yeah it’s just not going to happen and I can’t believe anybody is still waiting for him to do that

I mean it would suck for his family obviously, but so did doing the thing worth prison time in the first place

Sorry to say Pheremone but on top of him not being your friend he’s also not your lover and not your family, yeah.

Honestly I get why fans can be defensive about this shit. When you are a fan and you grow up on a band and their music, the revelation that they have done something horrible can shatter the image you hold of the band themselves. Some people find it easy to ditch them and move on, others not so much.
The important thing I think is that both sides understand each other. Die hard fans shouldn't be crowding and harassing the victims calling them liars and such, nor should they be going at those who choose to abandon the group.
On the other hand activists shouldn't be going into fan spaces trying to judge everyone who chooses to separate art from artist as a bunch of rape apologists.
