Jesus Christ is good, but it’s the “Creep” (also a good song) of Brand New imo. Kinda basic compared to their grander tracks.

Lmao forgot that line - would say the delivery>>>the content for sure there bc it sounds great and those words somehow never had much of a cringe factor
"YFW and Deja don’t exist as far as I’m concerned"
Woah, a man of culture

Basic ain’t bad when it’s executed so well. Great melody, lyrics, vocal harmonies, pacing. Creep is an all around terrible and juvenile song

Understated =/= basic
Also BN's Creep would obvs be Jude Law or I guess Sic Transit Gloria
|
| |
C’mon, the bridge in Creep is actually pretty dece “Sheeeeeeee’s running out the dooooOOOOOOOoooor.”
It’s a good song, just has nothing on their true masterwork.
|
| |
sure it can get a 1.5/5 instead of a 1

If we’re talking juvenile, I could’ve played Jesus on guitar within a month of picking up the instrument.
It’s a good song, just has nothing on their true masterwork.

Lolwat, idk what you're talking there but I'm pretty sure juvenile is the wrong word for it
Classic BN thread.

Did we ever get a blood test done to see if Modest Mouse and Brand New are related
|
| |
im obviously not referring to musical complexity when I say juvenile
and if complexity is the standard of quality then BN really wouldn’t be on the radar at all
|
| |
if I didn’t grow up with it, I would look back at those types of self hating 90s singles and be like wtf was wrong with people back then

90’s was best decade agreed

"Did we ever get a blood test done to see if Modest Mouse and Brand New are related"
I have no data, but willing to wager that Isaac Brock is an only child and Jesse Lacey has multiple siblings so the plot thickens
|
| |
"and if complexity is the standard of quality then BN really wouldn’t be on the radar at all"
mostly touché, but Luca and Limousine would beg to differ.
|
| |
Love both songs but neither is particularly complex technically, harmonically, structurally
|
| |
I suppose.
I mean, the way Luca builds up to it's Wall-Of-Sound moment is no entry-level musicianship. Same can be said of the fancy chords in the first part of Limousine, and the dynamic build in the 1-7 years section. Ain't no indie garage bands pulling that off.

| |
It’s all great songwriting, I just don’t think complexity is what makes it great, especially Luca. The artist provides the vision, but the power of the big riff that comes in relative to the rest of the song is totally a function of a good mix engineer.
As for Limousine, it may not be entry level but it’s not exactly Exile’s Gate either.

This is pretty much the -yang to Daisy, which is probably why I love Daisy more now, but I feel this is where they perfected their songwriting. Also this flows perfectly unlike TDAG; I think there are a couple of weak songs there and it doesn't flow as smooth as this, or even Daisy for that matter.
