if you mean 'spacious orchestral' tracks then sadly i'll have to disagree because they take up some of my favourite hammock tracks (in the middle of this nowhere and faility (for the dearly departed) are two of the most notable ones) on other hammock records.

Curious as to what makes this a failed effort then? Only because I don't hear it myself

It's not a failure to me just not one of their best efforts.

It's a way better attempt than Oblivion Hymns at the same sort of thing - but i thought OH was a bit overblown whereas this understated feel (for hammock anyway lol) works a lot better for this sort of thing

I actually strongly prefer OH but to each my fellow Hammock mega fan's own (:

Just listened to this...not feeling it. I like the styles of their previous one much better. All of tracks 1-10 here are composed of exactly the same elements and are virtually indistinguishable. Only the last track was interesting or memorable in any way.

i didn't find OH overblown at all - i think the balance was just right. understated and spacious where it needed to be, but knew exactly where it needed to be striking and memorable. the fact it went so seamlessly between the calmer movements like i could hear the water and in the middle of this nowhere to the huge emotional climaxes of tres domine and then the quiet explosion was the records real strength. this basically stays understated and spacious for its runtime. i understand the purpose of the record but there's plenty of other records i'd reach for when i want understated and spacious and this doesn't quite hit the mark for my taste.

Totally fair mate I get that. The sound this makes just feels pretty special to me even if the songwriting is pretty lacking

I mean it all sounds nice but this is lazy af, it's just a bunch of piano chords and basic string and occasional choral arrangements with the occasional guitar strum. I guess if you're in the right mood it would be perfect but as it was I only got the impression that this is pure wallpaper music.

totally wish i agreed with you! one of those things i suppose. [:
as for the above comment, i wouldn't go as far as calling the album lazy - everything in this album sounds very intentionally written, and i get its appeal and intentions, it just doesn't cater to my specific needs for ambient music. never considered hammock ambient, not what i look for in their music and that isn't going to start now.

"he ambient classical sweet spot i love is stars of the lid"
this has moar prominent strings tho, whereas SotL is much more subtle. Like this more than that I think.

it'a all about balance. for me, the prominent strings kind of take me out of that ambient mood and make me drift back into that mood of what i want hammock to deliver.

What out of their previous material (aside from this all I've heard is Everything and Nothing) is This Is Not Enough most reminiscent of? I like that more post-rock/dream pop oriented sound much more than the ambient stuff on the rest of this.

They had that style littered throughout their discog. This album, Oblivion Hymns and Maybe They Will Sing for Us Tomorrow are their ambient albums (along with the sleepover series). All the others are more like "This Is Not Enough", but without the vocals more often than not. I recommend Raising Your Voice next.

everything and nothing, chasing after shadows..., raising your voice.
i'd consider everything and nothing a fantastic hammock starting point because it showcases a little bit of everything that hammock are known for. has a LOT of shoegazy dreampop influence, too.

Interesting, it sounds like I may already have my ideal Hammock album in Everything and Nothing. I'll give Raising Your Voice a try though.
