"stars of the lid win"
could never get into their stuff past their last two albums, tho those two are really great.

Haha Lucid, I'd say that Hammock and Coldplay are the two bands I listen to most that get so unapologetically saccharine and cheesy at times, but it doesn't bother me that much.

ehhhhh found this to be super, duper corny. I mean I know it's Hammock; but you can only slap on the dramatic strings and super-dramatic choirs so often before I check out.

On second listen this isn't as good as their last one. Maybe I just have to be in the right mood for it, rather than having it on in the background while I work.

I mean isn't the kind of stuff this group does basically the definition of background music?

Yea for someone who doesn't like this kind of music as much

To clarify, background music doesn't have to be a bad thing

remember Brian Eno's definition of ambient music: "as ignorable as it is interesting"

It's so weird going through the Hammock discography. It feels like there's a 'traditional' post-rock band and an ambient band both dueling for the Hammock name ... and I love them both? I thoroughly enjoyed E&N and Oblivion Hymns, and I'm off to a good start with this one.
Love this review, btw, mindpos

This Is Not Enough is so good but I can't help but think it's really disjointed from the rest of the album

i think that was kind of the point (as i indicated in the review). just the simple fact that it's demarcated as an epilogue in the title helps put it in the right context, imo

Superb review! Love this album - it edges Oblivion Hymns for me and surpasses Everything & Nothing. I'm starting to prefer their more minimalist, ambient efforts.

This is great as usual. Not one of their best and some of the choir stuff I'm not a fan of, but it's yet another great work from them. For My Sister is by far the most powerful and genuine song on here. This Is Not Enough is also the Hammock I know and love.

Yeah to me this is a watered-down Oblivion Hymns. It has its moments but the highs don't reach as high as Like a Valley with No Echo or I Could Hear the Water. But I owe Hammock a few more listens

This and Oblivion Hymns are tied for my least favorite
Agreed that For My Sister is the best here

This is Hammock alright. But the Hammock we all love.

idk, i prefer oblivion hymns by a pretty significant margin. it has a lot more going for it. nothing here holds a candle to 'then the quiet explosion', 'i could hear the water' or 'in the middle of this nowhere'. this more or less stops at just being 'nice' and the only track i ever come back to is the closing track 'this is not enough'. i'm pretty disappointed, tbh.

ok shut up noctus i get your point on oblivion hymns now re-checking it. I think I might still like this one better, though, since it hits that ambient classical sweet spot I love.

the ambient classical sweet spot i love is stars of the lid, i don't consider oblivion hymns an ambient album so
