Maybe they have something to say in some of these songs hamid95, but overall I really feel like this album is not nearly as insincere and snobbish as people are accusing it of being. I don't think the satirical marketing campaign was supposed to be poignant commentary; That would've been fucking stupid.

I followed all of the Twitter shenanigans; Nothing more than the band joking around, seldom mean spirited; The most direct shot they took was the whole Jenner shirt ordeal and all proceeds for that move went towards charity. They really were just having fun; I don't see the band members as some out of touch, oblivious old group of men and women. They're indulging in the resources and technology they use day to day and accepting the power of social media in this day and age, and ultimately having fun with it.

I'm not gonna argue about the music, though.

LandDiving, your review is definitely not what I'm talking about; Really love the style here and I think it's a fair assessment.

Matter of fact, this is probably the most agreeable write-up on the album I've seen. You emphasize on the fact that despite how dodgy a lot of what is going on here may sound, the energy, jubilance and childlike relentless they back all these songs with is admirable on its own right.

One can't argue that the band does not love what they're doing here. They're having a field day with it and I'm happy for them. I'm also happy I like the music.

Arcade Fire is one of my favorite bands : (

There are some decent tunes here, yeah.

Personally, I think the critique around the use of electronic pop elements is silly. There's an overload of examples where indie acts can turn toward dance music without damaging whatever "sincere" or "authentic" credibility the band has.

Yeah I don't mind the direction they went

Just wish it didn't feel half-assed and annoying

Agreed. Album starts out pretty good, halfway through it's a total trainwreck and toward the finish line there are some groovy tracks.

Yeah I haven’t been attacking them, but this album is incredibly bad and half-assed and there’s nothing wrong to take that stance. They’ve got another album coming because they’ve got a contract with Columbia so I guess we’ll see next album. I haven’t written them off yet, but if the next album is worse than this one (which I find hard to achieve), then I probably will.

I don’t mind a shift in sound. Hell, I hold Reflektor to be their second best, but there’s a massive drop in content and quality here and it’s not hard to see.

I, too, don’t really see anything about the band thinking this is just light hearted fun. They speak of being proud of this album and act as if it’s a grand statement. If it were fun I feel they wouldn’t feel that strongly about it. They also come off way too urgent at times for it to be light-hearted. Their campaign was sorta iffy and bizarre for me. It was as if they were trying to cover up the fact that people weren’t enjoying the album by sending us things that made us go “what?!”. I feel “bizarre” is probably the best way to sum up this Arcade Fire phase and I hope to God it’s just a phase.

@BrushedRed

I'd watch it. You could end up getting annihilated with physical violence IRL. - Geoff

BrushedRed, I strongly disagree... Not everyone hated the singles leading up, reaction was polarized and only overwhelmingly negative towards Signs Of Life.

Sad part is that Signs of Life was way better than the first two singles, though only a 3/5 still. Everything Now was like an opener to a musical that couldn’t really hold its weight, much like the opener to La La Land. As a stand-alone track it’s only okay at best (cuz of that damn flute), would be better without that damn Shakira flute, but in the grand scheme it just falls flat, just like “Another Day of Sun” did in La La Land. And Creature Comfort was just abrasive and annoying. Electric Blue is still a standout and best track for sure, but they were doing weird things after the first two singles released. Then add a healthy heaping spoonful of filler on top of that and it’s just a mess.

Also I’m surprised that Fantano gave this a 4. I expected lower. He gave Junk a 3, and Junk is a masterpiece compared to this.

Also after this, Arcade Fire should go swing for their next album. That could be cool. Better than this anyway. Actually I’d love it. Take Funeral and go swing. (I’m being sarcastic but still it’ll be better than this)

I find Electric Blue to be charming because it reminds me of Kevin Parker (Currents era) or MGMT but yeah besides Electric Blue she sounds like pure shit

I feel if you listen to it while thinking of them or taking it as a psychedelic piece, it’s a damn fine track. I’ve always thought it was the misfit child of the album, but strangely it’s the shining, hypnotic moment. Her voice is pretty graceful and her confidence at the ending repetition really works. It’s easily the best thing here, imo. I normally don’t like Régine only songs, but I’d love an album full of Electric Blues. It would’ve blown this album to pieces, imo.

I really don’t se any comparisons to Reflektor here at all besides maybe the dance influence but here it just falls flat everywhere. The worst track on Reflektor is better than anything here

I mean they are both disco inspired alt-dance albums

One way better than the other
