Album Rating: 3.5
A 4.5 average with over 30 votes is still pretty impressive.

it's not that many votes. Not as impressive as Vektor last year when that album first dropped.

I don't remember what happened with Vektor because I wasn't following it since I never heard of them before

Their latest album had a 4.6 average for at least a month before it was bumped down.

I'm pretty dubious of the ridiculous ratings but i'll definitely check it, nice review

A lot of this album sounds so religious.

Boney to answer your question - which I'm pretty sure you asked semi-sarcastically at best, but I'll treat it as serious for the sake of the argument. Manchester Orchestra are a lot more beloved and influential than your cursory google search through RYM ratings has led you to believe. like a great article I read the other day (will link below) describes, the impact of their early albums - which were initially released on the band's home label and advertised basically by word-of-mouth - indie bands would cover MO's song's because "they felt like everyone's songs", and despite Andy Hull being barely a few years older than bands who were still just starting out in the gig scene, MO would easily draw crowds as dedicated and interested as the bands MO were touring with at the time - mewithoutYou, Brand New etc. They've managed to stay in a weird sweet spot where they're regularly drastically underrated by sites like RYM and Pitchfork - who'll fellate Brand New every day of the week, just goes to show that you can never quite predict which bands will be cool to like and which won't - and having an as you say 'rabid' fanbase who have stuck with the band through dozens of genre changes, a fascinating musical evolution, and a couple of not-so-great albums back to this new one. if you have time to read the uproxx article you'll see newer artists on the scene like Julien Baker, Sorority Noise, even the Daniels (movie directors) singing the band's praises. obviously you can write this all off as rabid blind fanbasing or nostalgia blindness if you so wish, but it sounds to me like you're doing what all the Pitchfork hipsters do and assuming the band aren't worth your time before you've even given them any time to actually sink in.

I really didn't think they had another album of this quality in them. Cope made my think they ran out of steam.
They didn't.

wouldn't be surprised if this album was well rated by pitchfork this time

I would be very surprised tbh. I feel like they are very dogmatic in thinking certain artists being cool no matter what they do (Kanye, Tame Impala etc.) and certain artists being bad no matter what they do.
The Maze is a beautiful opener.

Just want to say this after all this time this is still one of my absolute favourite bands (as is Thrice who are mentioned a couple of times in this thread).
But whereas TBEITBN (Thrice latest) was a great record, for Thrice I'd still rate it in the middle or bottom of their discography whereas I feel like Black Mile to the Surface will definitely rank higher. Too early to tell for me really with 1 play through, but I just got that feeling.
Also I wasn't that big of a fan of Cope (most people aren't I guess) I never doubted that they couldn't still make amazing albums. They wanted to make a straigthforward rock album and they did. (Hope >>>>> Cope).
Also yes The Dear Hunter are amazing too (though I knew Manchester Orchestra first and I feel like MO are the more well-known band of the two?).
