"Given how terribly pixelated the site makes the album art, I originally thought a person was hanging via noose"
I've been staring at this album art for almost 3 years and I've honestly never noticed that it could be seen two ways: either a person looking up and reaching/hanging on for dear life, or hanging from a noose, head drooping. I've only ever seen it in the former light, guess that makes me a glass half full kind of person? lol. I don't think the pixels matter much because now that you said it, Jom, I can't unsee it even on the full-size, HD image!
"Emotions are great and all but I’m talking about the song-writing. Other songs (The Parts, The Grocery) do the emotional heavy lifting imo, so the Mistake gets little points in that category.
Kinda just threw out the blurb about the Silence though, not as familiar with that one because it never draws my attention."
I find the entire album pretty intensely emotional, but The Silence is one track whose hill I will die on. I agree that The Mistake doesn't hit the highs of The Grocery, but it's still sad, wistful, and insightful.

The Silence video on youtube is pretty sweet. Simple, barebones... but it fits. Check it out.

Okay no I've checked it, and if you look closely you can clearly see it's someone looking upwards.

One of the best albums I’ve ever heard. Just a masterpiece.
Johnny, Start with the debut (which is excellent) and go chronologically. All their albums are good to great — yes, even Cope, which gets undue flack. It’s definitely their worst album, but still a solid 3.5.

slightly late to the discussion about the artwork, but the vinyl has some cool stuff nonetheless:

how it ties into the album is entirely one's own speculation though

I think those images are in the CD booklet as well.
I considered making woman on the roof my new avatar but that was pretty morbid even for me lol.

I didn’t even realise there was a person hanging from the tree (presumably it’s a tree anyway).

"The Moth" is such a larger than life song. Two years later and it still makes my heart race.
