"Where deathcore bands are criticized for monotonous songwriting and an overreliance on breakdowns..."

this band in a nutshell. death is the only mortal is the only album i can tolerate by these guys

"this band in a nutshell"

would just be a very tiny and compressed vincent shaking the nut shell from the inside

Losing their songwriter actually explains a lot.

I mean coma witch without observer would pretty much be shit tier, with some mild exceptions. still, it did somewhat grow on me after a few listens, wonder if it'll be the case with this one too. Not really inclined to listen again tho

"this band in a nutshell"

yeah except it's totally different for reasons given above

this criticism you're quoting is more about bands like as blood runs black and others like them

i would lump the acacia strain in with those kinds of bands tbh

to be fair i haven't listened to them in a while but i remember lots and lots of generic breakdowns. death is the only mortal had more melody and riffs iirc which is why i prefer it over their other stuff

But it amazes me that people would sooner say that TAS embodies all problems with deathcore rather than for example call them a sludge, doom or drone hybrid with deathcore, which would describe their sound much better IMO

deathcore doesn't really fit them in a technical sense since there's basically no death metal in their sound. they just happen to exemplify many of the common criticisms of deathcore

Yeah, but just the fact that music is slow all the time doesn't necessarily have to be a disadvantage

Surprised to see so many people that like DITOM, that's by far my least favorite album by these guys.

I really disliked it when it came out, but it grew on me more than any of their others

With these guys you can never have it all. DITOM has great and novel experimentation (especially for this band), but otherwise subpar songwriting. Wormwood is really underrated though, and its songwriting is surprisingly good, takes a while to appreciate though

Oh. Oh god. That first paragraph is wonderful but it has me worrying. I've never listened to these guys and I might be going to a show of theirs next week.

I wanted to quickly dispell my bias, my preconceived notion that these guys made juvenile Five Finger Death Punch "pissed off" music to deathcore tropes.

But it looks like that's what do do, to a T.

I'm gonna get high as fuck and try to find enjoyment. Do they put on a good show at least?

Huh, I gave them a listen (Continent & Coma Witch) and it wasn't as god-awful as I was expecting! Should be fun live.

Huh whaddayaknow, they actually put on a good show. Vincent has fuck ton of energy and a very kind stage presence. Not a fan of the music on record but it's a good live show.
