Side 2 Ranked/Rated:
1. Man of War [4.5] (better than 'I Promise' no?)
2. Polyethylene 1&2 [4.5]
3. I Promise [4]
4. Pearly [4] (how can the blueprint for Matt Bellamy not be something I want to eject into the cold vacuum of space?...only Radiohead have the answer)
5. Lull [4]
6. A Reminder [4]
7. Lift [3.5]
8. Meeting in the Aisle [3.5]
9. Made My Millions [3.5]
10. Melatonin [3]
11. Palo Alto [3] (woah, too much cynicism for even me guyz)
Overall a [3.8], prefer it to 'Hail to the Thief', 'Amnesiac', 'Pablo Honey' and 'King of Limbs' but I do like this era best...

this review is CRAP!

Album Rating: 4.5
How I Made My Millions is one of my favorite Radiohead b-sides
|
| |
I Promise is really boring
Man of War is pretty good
and so is Lift
I don't really love any of them though
|
| |
Thom's singing on 'I Promise' is real nice though
|
| |
So is his singing on most Radiohead songs, doesn't make up for the boring lyrics and repetitive acoustic guitar that lacks originality
|
| |
Its got its own humble ambitions I guess and it more than delivers on them, it's a perfect opener in this setting I think. It kinda bosses that scene setting/extended intro role.
The fact it has those military drums and the next song is 'Man of War' just helps me feel like I'm listening to an actual Radiohead album rather than a B-Side comp. Think the songs flow really well here.
|
| |
I don't get the feeling at all
If fact 3 new songs make me not feel that this is even fair to rate.
|
| |
I haven't rated it, I like that they've finally assembled these songs into as close to an album format as they'll ever get because they're good enough for that imo (the 'Driving' EP was always a 3.5/4 in terms of quality for me anyway and this adds three songs that would have been among the best of that crop).
The band have even better B-Sides scattered here and there elsewhere ('talk show host', 'cuttoth', 'ill wind', 'fog') but in terms of consistency in quality and tone this is top, just beating 'In Rainbows Disc 2' by a whisker.
|
| |
I guess I'm just pleased I'll only ever listen to these B-Sides as part of this 'album' now and it feel substantial enough that I'll actually spin it as a 'proper album' like 'Rainbows Disc 2'

The fact you don't like Amnesiac makes it hard to take your opinion them seriously honestly since I adore that album
Especially since you think this boring outtake and b-side collection is better
|
| |
lol, all those 5s.

Ars you just have different taste, you are very focused on experimentation/originality - two traits I see as not inherently worthy in and of themselves (they are no guarantee of quality or suitability). If you believe stuff like 'Pulk/pull', 'Glass House' and remixes of 'Morning Bell' are this band playing to their natural strengths that's your opinion, but I'll never agree.
I personally think those three songs are the epitome of wrong turns (they're all worse than anything here other than maybe Palo Alto). The remainder doesn't have a 'classic' song among them, nothing top 25 (Pyramid Song is no Disappear Completely, Knives Out is no Paranoid Android, etc). The best song is probably 'Dollars and Cents', maybe 'I Might Be Wrong', but neither blow me away and the whole thing has a muddled dirge-y aesthetic that's so grim after the sleek majesty of 'Kid A'. Hated it when it came out, kind of made my peace with it now but it just only has about five decent songs on it and the overall murkiness drags it down lower sadly.
'Amnesiac' is like the anti-In Rainbows which is so inviting and sparkly - it's also a less successful B-Side collection than this ;P

| |
It's more than originality, it's about pure aesthetic in a lot of ways, which is more important that lyrics and even structure in a lot of ways to me
|
| |
That's what's so great about Amnesiac, it's dark and uninviting and out there and pretty and mesmerizing in a lot of ways because of it
|
| |
'Amnesiac' is muddied, murky and incoherent for me with a misstep around every corner - but we can agree to disagree.
I find this era of Radiohead the most timeless personally. 'The Bends' is a little 90s hokey around the edges but I never feel that about 'Computer'
|
| |
Radiohead's first 2 albums are fairly boring, even if The Bends has enough highlights to make up for it kind of
OK Computer is wonderful I can agree to that, it's my 4th favorite Radiohead album
