>It has just occurred to me how disproportionately 'popular' this album is in the context of their discog. I wonder how many people check the new one out (and then don't listen to anything else from their back-catalogue, lol)

Yeah. I know the internet age and gotta get them year end lists sorted bug / curse at whatnot, but still I found it surprising. Narcotic Story pushes TBD close in total ratings admittedly, yet I'd expect it to easily eclipse this based on rep / the passage of time. It's also seen as the premier 'starting point' by many fans.

Serenade's rating total on the other-hand is a complete travesty

I guess a lot of people didn't totally fall for this in a way which would make them inclined to dig deeper

or maybe you/we overestimate most ppls willingness to go check the back catalogue of a band thats been around 30+ years even if they did enjoy the new one

Yeah, perhaps. It's easy to get music ADHD these days and then forgetting to return / complete discogs etc. I understand.

Review is happening and about half finished - not a band I've ever been keen to write at length on, but the ice is broken and this is good fun. Will try to get it up asap

I found writing about them fun, despite being challenging. Good to hear though. I have slapped a placeholder rating as it’s certainly very good so far, just not sure how I feel about some of the mid-section (part way through my second run). The opening pair are immediately gratifying fire. Lovely Murk is a great moodier accompaniment to slow the pace. Then for a good while there's very little of that signature atonal noise, more of a moody choral sadboi blues thing going on. I'm also experiencing minor disappointment at the lack of a 'slow-build into noise explosion behemoth' at any point. Atmosphere is THIKK tho, so it certainly could be a grower.

edit: 'The Night the Room' is already growing on me

Fantano and Christgau bow to Scaruffi. In contact with aliens. Possess psychic-like abilities to review albums, can hear 25 albums at the same time and fully understand them all to the molecular level. Control all music review publications with an iron but fair fist. Will bankroll the next biggest "indie" band. Direct descendants of the ancient royal blood lines. Can make entire careers with a single blurb. Said to have 215+ IQ, such intelligence on Earth has only existed deep in Tibetan monasteries & Area 51. The Tunguska event in 1908 was the Scaruffi's first arrival on the planet Earth. You likely have Scarufficore inside your top ratings right now. Scaruffi is in regular communication with Orpheus and the Sirens, forwarding the word of Gods to rym reviewers . He learned all music theory in under a week. Invented Post-Anabelian Froeboid poly rhythms, a complex drum pattern which only they can comprehend fully. All artist have made music in hopes of appealing to him in one way or another. Scaruffi is about 7 decades old, from the space-time reference point of the base human currently accepted by our society, knows what music actually matters from now in shaping the future. In reality, he is a timeless beings existing in all points of time and space from the big bang to the end of the universe. We don’t know his ultimate plan yet, but we hope he is a benevolent being.

no 'An Evil Heat' rating fox?

And yeah, I'm purposefully picking apart the new one because these guys have set such high standards, but it's a winner for sure

very interesting new album - they've shaken up their style yet again, love that the vocals are always unique compared to most anyone else but also they alter a little between releases too

Ah right, I'd seen some ratings so was curious. Most people start with Narcotic Story or An Evil Heat, but I'm guessing you might be one of those chrono discog fellas. Nothing wrong with that. Each era has something unique to offer.

yeah Doof, the new one certainly brings Eugene's morose sadboi blues side to the fore, certainly in more obvious ways than anything else I've heard from them (not that it didn't exist previously). It's almost serene in comparison to some of his more idiosyncratic performances, yet still full of personality.

new record has made me appreciate this one an extra bit more, think I'd take it over the Narcotic Story and it could maybe challenge King of the Jews for their 3rd best

Think the last two tracks on this are pretty handily settling in as the overall highlight. Probs their best closing combo after an Evil Heat, so so good

I can accept this being up there with Narcotic Story. Really not sure I get the general assessment of Jews or Serenade's (presumed?) placement, but that one seems generally underrated hence the need for me to put out that glowing review.

This band doesn't have bad albums and as I've said before each era has something to offer, yet there are 'levels' and so here they are...

An Evil Heat

---------------

Serenade In Red

--------------

Narcotic Story

Thin Black Duke

--------------

Let Me Be A Woman

Love's Holiday (somewhat provisional)

--------------

King of the Jews

Fuckfest

Swap King of the Jews (which is excellent and debased in a far looser way that nothing else they've done rly touches on) with Narcotic Story, and bump that up to share the LMBAW and Love's Holiday tier, and this is just about perfect yus

Let Me Be A Woman is a weird one for me, perhaps the album I'm least invested in as an end to end, but so so good on the level of individual songs. Gal and Me and the Moon o fuck
