lol not a fan of this. Thought I had it rated lower tbh. Revisited it for a weekly and just... idk man. Not for me. I had to write a blurb. May as well post it as a soundoff so you can field my complaints.

Nevermind. The blurb is too long for a soundoff and isn’t worthy of being a review. So it goes.

Ah, Strapping Young Lad. The City. ‘Extreme’ Devin Townsend.
Sadly, this feels more like a band trying real hard to make an extreme metal album than an actual, genuine extreme metal album. It checks a lot of boxes for the designation, sure; breakneck sections, (mostly) wild and polarizing vocals, and an aggressive front. But it all feels like a facade to me. Some of the lyrics on this, especially the tough guy stuff on songs like All Hail the New Flesh and AAA (one of the worst offerings) feel very put on, much like the zany vocals that Devin puts forth in much of Oh My Fucking God. I just don’t buy the performance anywhere here.
Granted, this is probably a decent gateway album for someone looking to get into something heavier than what you’d find on the radio, but that’s about all it is: one notch away from the mainstream success that Townsend has struggled to find his whole career. While I know this album is revered in some circles, I’ve never really seen Townsend fans crying for a return to this style and I think that’s because he isn’t really great at it, whereas a band like Opeth pisses off their fans year after year, album cycle after album cycle purely for leaving out the harsh vocals they’ll likely never hear again in favor of throwback progressive rock worship. The main difference here being that Opeth’s heavy albums have a real, lasting merit of quality and City, frankly, does not. What Devin is doing now (whether I like it or not) has found a much more dedicated audience. What he does now is understandable and genuine. The desire for him to revisit this style just doesn’t exist and for good reason. City just doesn’t stand out among hundreds of extreme metal albums that exist for more than the sake of being extreme metal.

Haha thanks for sharing dude. Devin has said though that he always treated SYL as more of a parody band and that his solo music is his main focus. I think his fans understand that and that's why you don't see them begging for more albums like this
