This cd's ok I guess. You can't deny the single is catchy as hell. But AFI used to be so good.

I really don't like their more "punky" songs but I love their other songs which I don't have a name to describe. Songs like Love like winter, missing frame, etc

I don't understand how people can be ok with AFI sounding like this. EVERY band changes, not every band becomes horrible, completely loses sight of its previous sound, catalog, and fans in the process. They wont even play a song older than Art of Drowning live. Even bands that have completely changed in sound (Thrice) play their older songs.

Unfortunately to me, it seems like AFI has been suckered in to the world of money and major labels. What self respecting band allows a record label to force a band to re-release a single with an altered bridge that removed Davey's screaming in an effort to appeal to more people. Oh, new AFI will.

FUCK AFI.

...and just how retarded are you? Any halfwit knows they've never opted to change for money. Also there's a shitload of bands that never/rarely play old stuff (In Flames, Opeth, Dark Tranquillity, etc.) You can't hold a grudge because a band released something you didn't like, get over yourself.

First of all, what other explanation do you care to offer as to why the band has a) COMPLETELY changed their sound upon arriving at a major record label. and b) releasing a different version of the same song (Miss. Murder) SPECIFICALLY for radio use. What self-respecting artist re-releases there music again at their record label's beckon? Honestly, besides money, what else can it be?

Yeah, sure there are of bands that don't play old stuff, but you ever notice bands that stay relevant beyond their years are the ones who grow and ALSO recognize where they have come from.

The best part about your post though is the end, I can't hold a grudge against a band? Last time I checked I can do whatever the fuck I want, and if I, and a large portion of AFI's fans who started listening to them before they started on this suck train, don't care to listen to their new records and are frustrated with their new music then we get to do that. Sorry we miss a band that actually had balls instead of singing about love being like winter.

Go listen to "Shut Your Mouth and Open Your Eyes".

::rolls eyes:: so if you're making that relation to the single, then opeth sold out when they released a video that was half the length of the song for money since people don't like long songs.

your second point didn't prove me wrong on anything, but as far as your third, I'm well aware you can do what you want, but you have no validity in your argument against this album. At least mynameischan can back himself up, you just bitch and bitch. And I have listened to "shut your mouth" but I like this album better 8)

My argument against Decemberunderground:

1. It takes away AFI's uniqueness. A hardcore punk band with singing as well as screaming, imaginative lyrics, intense music that didn't force anything. These are what defined AFI. With December, all of this is gone. The heavier songs feel forced, the slower tracks drag on, the bass and drums - previous standouts on past records - have both taken back seats due to the slow tempo. Davey has had better singing moments on all of the other records, usually a vocalist, especially, improves over time.

2. The change in sound hurts the band. I am all for band's changing. I already mentioned them, but I think Thrice is a good example. "Identity Crisis" sounds vastly different than "The Alchemy Index" but the same pieces are still present, just implemented in different ways. A change in a band's sound shouldn't result in a completely different band. AFI might as well change their name, because they sound NOTHING like their older work. A band's evolution should be for the better, not to take away the strong suits of the band, and to leave it as a shell of its former self.

3. It is straight up boring. Nothing on this album jumps out of your speakers and makes you take notice. I don't mind longer songs, but when they just make the songs more repetitious and thus less listenable, it doesn't make much sense.

4. The musicianship across the board has decreased. Guitar, bass, drums, vocals have all deteriorated. Its a pretty sad fact that the punk version of the band had catchier riffs, better drum parts and more varied bass lines, when punk music is categorized as repetitious and un-inventive.

Unless you are just arguing for the sake of arguing, I dont you can in any way think that the new music that AFI makes is enjoyable.

What validity do you have in in saying that this record is in anyway an improvement of their previous work, or for that matter, close to being a good record in general, previous history ignored. What in YOUR eyes make this a good record?

To me, this album is an excellent progression. Their early sound is, to me, mostly terrible- before Jade Puget was in the band, the music sound just like every other badly-recorded punk band at the time. This can't be Davey Havok's passion- he was a lame punk singer, and he has a tattoo dedicated to Morrissey for Chrissake. After Jade Puget joined the band, they diversified the elements of their music and made it genuinely interesting for those that weren't into snot-nosed punk. Songs like "Miss Murder", "Summer Shudder" and "The Interview" are all far superior to shit like "Highschool Football Hero" or "I Wanna Get A Mohawk".

You've got to grow up sometime, and AFI have done it in style, particularly with Sing the Sorrow, which is one of the best records of the 00s in my opinion.

Also, I see anyone who prefers old AFI to new as the same kind of people that don't like gourmet food but don't mind three-day-old KFC left in a bucket on a park bench.

everything they wanted to achieve in DU was done and dusted in one simple song..

The Despair Factor.

as a huge AFI fan, after listening to nearly every single pre DU songs, especially the ATASF songs, it really really helps you understand why so many people argue why DU fell so weak against their true orginal roots in hardcore and punk rock, wheres DU is no where near the genre they grew up with and were once the proud fore front of the East Bay Hard Core Scene. Please do not hate, and please do not be ignorant. Especially to those who only have warmed to the band after hearing Miss Murder on MTV or whatever, and then arguing with older fans about why DU "iz da bestast ceedee lyke eva" and whining and crying about stuff. I honestly Shut My Mouth and Opened Up My Eyes after hearing A Fire Insides older work, Davey's vocals were so ingrained into the snotty punk rock and the riffs and melodies were so fast and aggressive. I was honestly taken back by all this, and I came only to love AFI after hearing Sing The Sorrow (which is still say is the best record by them). DU was good, but def not worthy of a 4.5. More of a 3, depending on how you came across the band. The same could be said for FOB and MCR by the way. But that's another and much longer story, folks.

those 101 fan's that came to see them back in 1994/1995 and witnessed long forgotten classics like Mini Trucks Suck and You Said You Could Touch Me? would be turning in their graves..oh, and it's also really funny to watch all the whiny teeny kids get wall pitted and circle jumped by the much more older and dedicated fans in I Hear A Voice DVD. =p at least some of them are still alive and keeping the true Fire Inside!
