Second album had some good songs, agreed. They'll never live up to their first album, especially since most of the original members have left

Adore the first album, can barely remember the second, will jam this to see what I can see

Listening to this, it's basically forgettable like the second album. The thing that made The Earth Pushed Back so good was the ability to create such memorable hooks. These past two albums haven't changed the sound at all, but the hooks are just...absent.
This doesn't make me want so sing about hair at all, 2.5/5

This record sucks. I can't believe how far they dropped off, and so quickly. Like, their last record wasn't good aside from maybe 3 songs, and I think their debut is absolutely fantastic. TEPB was so hooky and so emotionally charged, now they just write uninspired butt rock. And I read in an interview that Swindle thinks the songs are "much better written" now, and that the songwriting on the first record wasn't good. Like....is he listening to the same record we are?

I'm enjoying this. was slightly disappointed at first, but that's just because coexist is such a banger the other songs don't really live up to it. reaper is cool tho.

I'm really digging this record - it's very hooky IMO, and it has some nice guitar work on it.

I really don't get the negativity around this album. I like it a LOT. They basically sound exactly like The Dangerous Summer now, which I like. Maybe many of you had too high expectations?

yeah i do admit i probably had too high of expectations for it, and objectively it's probably a solid 3 maybe, but in context of their discography it's a light 2, maybe less if i'm being honest

I agree, the lyrics are pretty bland, but from the three interviews I've read of Swindle, he claims that he has really "honed his songwriting skills" (in comparison to tEPB), but I would assume he's referring more to a commercial point of view. The lyrics do get a same-y feel as one navigates through the album.
Two diamonds in the rough though...(and they happen to be the two that are least like the rest of the album).
--"Ghosts" : "can you haunt these halls...can you be my ghost" ... "it's like i'm still begging you to stay" . Surprised this isn't a single.
--"Good Christian Man" : I don't know why this wasn't used as the closing song, the actual closing song is just more of the generic parts of the album. But this one, by far, out of the rest of the album, GCM is the black sheep. I also can relate to it, so full disclosure there, some bias on my end.

I actually dig this album quite a bit, more so the second half.
The Earth Pushed Back was my AOTY that year, however I didn't care much for A Place of Our Own. I think the second half of this album redeems it and it's my favorite stuff from Have Mercy since The Earth Pushed Back.

Came back around to this recently and I think I was a little too harsh upon its release. There's definitely a few gems in here. Baby Grand has a really solid chorus, Begging For Bones is a jam, Drive is super catchy, and Coexist is a solid song. If you accept that this Have Mercy is a totally different band than they were on TEPB and try to stop constantly comparing them like I was, this really isn't a bad record; just rather bland and same-y.

I'm liking this one quite a bit, to be honest. Don't really understand the hate, although I will admit the hooks aren't very strong. The aesthetic and overall feel are superb in my opinion.

Add me to the "don't get the hate" bandwagon... This might be the most under-rated album of the year around these parts... I'm presuming it was a combination of:
- low rating review,
- can't top their debut &
- this isn't the same band.
Just treat the album on its own merits though and this is excellent imo.

most of the songs have decent verses and then the choruses are just bland as shit.
