@ JotS - In fairness pos/neg ratio has verrrrrrrrrry little to do with writing ability and almost everything to do with muh feels. Might as well be an agree/disagree button, as I've noticed nearly no difference in the reception of reviews that are controversial versus simply poorly written.

I wasn't just talking about pos/neg ratios tbf. It's well known that those aren't reliable indicators

I remember when I pissed off Adrian he went through all my reviews and negged them. What a guy.

But as to your other points, while they may be valid in this instance (idk cause I haven't read the review nor do I really care to) a controversial review will get shit on in the comments by users who disagree with it rather than users who have issues with the way it's written. So it's not simply limited to pos/neg when talking about the reception a review gets being tangentially tied (at most) to its actual quality.

Yeah I stopped reading in the second paragraph so can confirm this is just a flat-out badly written review. Didn't even try to proof it by the looks of it.

@Johnny: it's just very discouraging when I hear that my reviews are basically shit when I've been writing for awhile here and I'm always asking for feedback and constructive help! I do take that very seriously, and if anything being featured always shows me a sign that I'm improving as it has in the past. I do want to improve, I decided to take a personal review into retrospect for this review rather than the usual. Thought I'd try something different, and definitely a strong indicator that I won't do personal writeups again.

Pissing people off and feeling like people are being forced to read my reviews also really is frustrating to hear when I'm always striving to peak the interest of the reader. This is what I want to do, I want to be a music journalist. I just don't want to start thinking, "oh the masses hate my writing so it looks like I won't be a good music journalist"

Whether you find it discouraging or not, or anything related to how you feel about things, ain't gon change a thing. Pull yourself up and keep on.

Exercise some frustration tolerance, don't take it on other people my niqqa

you might just have to get a friend proofread because a lot of these sentences are pretty gnarly. dunno what else to say

and ppl will be hesitant to give you honest, unfiltered feedback if you get defensive.

tbh you say you ask for feedback and constructive criticism but if you're not going to take it on board and actually make changes to what is a quite painful writing style, you're really just being disingenuous in saying that you're (trying to)//(wanting to) improve.

Above all, no one here is out there trying to make you feel miserable -- they worded their criticism in the most neutral way possible, so don't feel discouraged to participate. Just chill, it's ok to not be perfect.

I think this highlights another problem with your review. Your 2nd paragraph literally exposes the fact that the songs you were talking about were from completely different ventures, and that would be fine if your wording was better or if this was a long review. But you spend almost an entire first paragraph highlighting songs that aren't even on the album in a way that makes them seem like they are features on the record itself.

When I first read the opening line of your third paragraph I thought it was going to be an emotional closing paragraph or somehing ... but it ends up just being you describe another song with an extremely poor and awkward transition. What's worse is that this just shows how cramped your review is. I mean you talk about 2 songs (iirc?) in your second paragraph and just rush another description near the end of the review. And your first paragraph makes this sound like this is a bold step or something in her career...but you didn't really describe how.

I think you have potential to be a great writer, but I think you need to do a few things. First of all, maybe spend time reviewing albums that are more significant to your music taste? I get that reviewing is an AMAZING time waster, but it's quite clear that you're more concerned about adding an entry to your review log than anything else. This doesn't sound personal and beyond that hardly anyone cares about the artist ... the point of short reviews are usually to start a thread to discuss in (see : Fripp's recent review) but I don't think that was the intention here. So it just comes out like a pointless review. You describe almost every female pop artist you review as inspirational or emotionally powerful , and you kind of overuse the concept of "not sticking it to conformity" or whatever it is. This wouldn't be bad except it's such a staple in your reviews it's value wheres over time, you use it for nearly any pop artist. And as others have said your wording is just very bad honestly.

anyways, i rambled way too much wow. Hope you can see some value in the mess i just wrote. why not contact other people on the site (if you're short friends that care about writing or music) to help you with your reviews? I think that might go a long way!.

"With the standards that society has placed upon us today, conformity was absolute if there was any chance for me to fit. The countless amounts of money spent for those who didn't deserve it, yet did these things just to be cared about. Eventually that all came to an end, abandoning it all only to descend towards isolation and loneliness. "
