"Spacesh1p, this is one of the most devastating effects that come directly from a community becoming gentrified -- we've seen entire neighborhoods having to relocate because of it. Also, my intent was not to highlight gentrification, but Chicano Batman's response to gentrification. The whole "unity and hope" aspect. Sorry if that wasn't made completely clear. Either way, thanks for reading the review and dialoguing about this"
Agreed with you totally. That's not something that should happen at all.
I appreciate that you gave a well thought out response to me. To your point about neighborhood safety, I'm with you on that. I just think that generally, there's a limited supply of the most desirable places to live on the planet and no really good way to distribute them.

One other album that's themed around gentrification in Los Angeles is Chávez Ravine from Ry Cooder.

LA LA land rocked, this is music for white people to feel like they are trying something different, something "exotic" I don't know, it sounds rehashed and warmed over to me sorry

I'll definitely check this out! This is the first record I've listened to that has spoken on this subject. When I saw Chicano Batman live at the local music fest here, they were really good at not being accusatory while still letting people know that LA has been changing.

Honestly La La Land was like a 7/10 for me. I had a good time with it. The slight dig I so inconspicuously made was directed towards the Los Angeles that the film set out to portray. It's the kind of story that the hip coffee shops, boutiques, and shitty landlords are perpetuating as the real Los Angeles while some communities suffer greatly at their expense. That being said, this is hardly "music for white people." I have no idea where you are getting that from haha.
And forgive me if I sound pretentious in any of this -- it's just that for a long time I loved going to those hip coffee shops and boutiques but since I've been in Los Angeles for about five years now, I'm starting to see the negative impact those things can have on communities here. I'm learning a lot, but I'm certainly no expert on socioeconomic and culture dynamics lol.

Nah d00d super brown. And La La Land doesn't explicitly have anything to do with it -- the association is that it's an image of LA that is perpetuated, and that perpetuation tends to feed itself into the reality of gentrification in communities throughout LA.

I just want to point out that La La Land wasn't truly romanticizing LA culture, but was actually exposing it as a superficial and surface-level. The idealized imagery was more of a means of satire rather than reverence.

Great review & record. CB seem so very heavily influenced by the Los Amigos Invisibles gang. I'm surprised you didn't give them a nod.
