I wanted to acknowledge it but all I could see was the error and I didn't want to embarrass you

Sputuku time.

That is surprising though, I'd assume CI had quite a few more honestly.

true ascendency is acknowledging Calc isn’t their best (it ain’t this either, but I respect such opinions)

Calc rips, but it does have that "every song sounds kinda the same" issue. i LOVE the variety you get on later albums with songs like Widower or w/e and the super catchy melodies of Milk Lizard for example

Instead of having vocal variety (Dmitri slaps btw) they went for some experimental instrumental passages for ‘respite’. It does work pretty darn well as a contrast to the heavy stuff… but yeah.

Puciato’s croons are an essential part of tDEPs transformation and they also expanded their arsenal in other ways.

Calc is now weirdly even more distinctive in retrospect though, which is a bit of a contradiction in some ways. I’m of the belief these guys started repeating themselves somewhat on Killer / Dissoc. Opinions may vary.

I can see that Demon, that was probably one of the reasons they broke up too.

EDIT: Also how have I not rated this record yet lmao

"Puciato’s croons are an essential part of tDEPs transformation and they also expanded their arsenal in other ways."

Absolutely. He's got an extremely rare vocal talent and they, as a band, did wonders accommodating that. Dmitri's contribution, whilst effective for what it was, didn't offer that. So yeah, the variety came from the others.

"I’m of the belief these guys started repeating themselves somewhat on Killer / Dissoc. Opinions may vary."

Yeah, I also think that they were at the point of exhausting their innovation about then. They broke up at the right point.

Disagree about them repeating themselves, but agreed hard about them breaking up at the right point. They have a perfect discography and left it that way imo.

I remember a time when multiple bands like Gojira, Mastodon, Opeth and several other bands basically had perfect discgos when I was in college...but then I graduated college and they kept going.

Agalloch came so close, if they just broke up before Serpent they would have had a perfect discog (not that the albums bad, just not a masterpiece).

Theres only like 3 or 4 bands that fit that category for me now (Dillinger, Meshuggah, Death, prob one other that I can't remember)

Alice In Chains pre reunion, even tho I think Black Gives Way to Blue is just as good as their 90’s material.

Birds in Row (so far), Converge not counting that first record imo, Deftones is up there for me but I know a lot of people don’t care for Gore, Gorguts for sure, Gaza, Shin Guard and a shitload of other short lived screamo bands, Botch, The Armed (again, so far), Julie Christmas, I know there’s some I’m forgetting but that’s my personal list anyways.

And yeah I realize most of those bands are still active. And again, I know a lot of folks won’t agree but that’s my personal list along with some of the bands Lucca already mentioned.

Can we count Biggie too? I’d really only count Ready to Die but that’s the goated rap album imo. And even then Life After Death is fucking solid

And while I’m talking hip hop, Run the Jewels too if I’m feeling generous. 3 is the obvious weak link but there’s still a lot of bangers on that record.
