oh do shut up baseline, we're trying to have a civilized conversation here

Haha, that little bar-chart you have splitting each genre is just going to be painted the colour 'jazz'. =)

I really need to get more of his albums. I have no excuse; they aren't too expensive. =)
Definitely will. Ned, after you've listened to some; can you throw me some recommendations on which are the best?

sure man, having listened to quite a few already, this and ah um are the best places to start -
they're the best of his big-band and small-band stuff, respectively. then I'd start with his early
classics - Pithecanthropus Erectus, The Clown and Blues and Roots, and probably oh yeah. His later
stuff is equally good if not better, but a lot less accessible and mostly big band, so it's worth
seeing how much you really like this first. If you do, Let My Children Hear Music is easily the best
late-period.

Jazz isn't really something you can get into I find.
You either like it or you don't. I could be totally wrong but I've liked jazz since I can remember. I get nostalgic over it.
If I didn't like it; I wouldn't be able to force myself to understand it or anything. It's all about sounds; you either like the sounds or you don't.
I'm probably not much help but that's just what I've found with everyone I've met. =)

no problem man, I'm always happy to have an excuse to go all fanboy over mingus =)
|

Haha, I don't blame you! =)
The guy is a genius. Wish we had jazz legends like him now. I mean, I really like Vijay Iyer's stuff but not as much as Mingus, Brubeck and the likes.

there's some great modern jazz around, but no-one comes close to people like Mingus and Monk.
We still have Sonny Rollins though!

we do have jazz legends now, they just arent as popular and dont sound like the older generation. william parker, peter brotzmann, evan parker, alexander von schlippenbach, charles gayle, david s ware, hamid drake, cooper-moore, susie ibarra... there are many great players around. they dont play the same kind of jazz is all, just as mingus, monk, coltrane, miles etc didnt play the same jazz that lester young, charlie parker, bix beiderbecke or count basie did.
Note to self: "Jazz fanatics are very delusional and actually believe that they're enjoying music with no melodies, harmonies and breakdowns."
it seems entirely plausible that you have a very limited understanding of those terms, if you stand by that statement.
