yeah i can somewhat relate, once i got into prog rock and fusion it just reminded me of all the nintendo and sega shit i liked growing up but never really sat down and listened to. its neat when your tastes come full circle like that

For sure. I would definitely attribute video games to a lot of music I like now, too. Including the more obvious interest in chiptunes music, too.
It's interesting though. Beyond the more loud and punchier aesthetics, I would have thought people did emotionally resonate with metal. Although, I think it's also fair to say you can feel a certain something when complex music moves you or influences your emotions. Even if it's escapism or the absurdity of it that's fun, that's still some emotional resonance isn't it? It may not be as 1:1 as connecting with a lyrical line or something very tangible like an acoustic ballad but it's still invoking some kind of emotional response.
It's like with jazz for me when I started listening to jazz. I saw it as nostalgic and romantic.

oh theres definitely an emotional response for fans of metal, but people who arent into it often complain that they cant relate to it because its not very personal music. i see the same complaints towards prog and fusion though, the technicality of it comes across as soulless to them because theyre wanting like, elliott smith or something. obviously if youre into that stuff it does feel soulful and moving

and tbh metal to me does actually have a lot of personal lyrics and politically charged stuff but theres just as much metal thats describing lord of the rings and magical forests and shit and that whole vibe tends to just turn people off. plus the abrasiveness of the music often comes across as "cheesy" or forced to people who dont like it, they tend to see it as aggro anger music whereas metalheads themselves are usually calmed down and relaxed by the stuff

Oh that's certainly not the reason for me and to be honest, being a fan of various genres such as jazz, that form of musical expression is soulful.
With metal, it's more a case of the more abrasive and louder sounds that aren't my cup of tea but such is the way of any genre. I don't like some techno music because I find its associations claustrophobic XD.
Similarly, there's a lot of music as you described that is supposed to be quite overtly emotional in a similar vein to Ed Sheeran that doesn't do anything for me. His music reaches millions, it's played at weddings, makes people cry, hug, all kinds but despite how personal it can be, it doesn't touch me.
Beauty is in the eyes of the beholder and all that haha. We all have our own individual experiences and art touches us all differently.

some ppl find brass grating

Also just to note. While I find metal abrasive, I don't think it's necessarily cheesy. I just have gentle wee ears.

i feel like with metal the vocals/lyrics are part of the overall aesthetic and tend to blend along with the music itself, ie death metal growls becoming sort of an instrument in themselves, whereas with say, pop punk or something, it comes across more as the music is a vehicle for some sort of emotion being conveyed, like the music is an afterthought to some political idea or relationship trouble that needs to be expressed. obviously the people who are into it and play it wouldnt feel that way though lol, but thats just how it can come off to me. im actually a huge fan of the descendents but as i get older i find a lot of their songs about getting friendzoned a bit of a turnoff. whereas with metal, i can ignore questionable lyrics a little better because it just kinda blends in with the riffs and solos and all that

I think the sound of pop-punk is important. Maybe the musicianship doesn't require as much complexity. There's a certain style to the sound and structure of that music which compliments the message. It gets the meaning across well for those who listen to it. Which I suppose is why people who like pop-punk listen to that music over other forms of pop and rock.
I can tune myself out of lyrics if the musicianship is good (See Dirty Loops) but I also like the opposite. There are some simple songs with just a beautiful melody paired to thoughtful words that speak volumes. Even thinking about work songs which didn't have an instrumental accompaniment most of the time. It was born out of people singing words and melody describing the work they were doing. https://youtu.be/zsiYfk5RV_Q

but yeah re: your pop punk thoughts, that kinda just shows how subjective and hard to empirically quantify all this stuff really is. we all hear different things with different music. it all just kinda boils down to appeals to you or doesnt appeal to you

sometimes i meet someone in public who likes my metal t-shirt and theyll be surprised i like all this other shit i like. but then someone who digs my frank zappa shirt will sometimes be like "wait, youre into that death metal stuff?"
|
| |
Do you think that's more likely to happen with someone interested in metal? I can imagine it surprises people to learn that a person who listens to metal and dresses in the fashion can listen to other genres. XD

it depends. ive noticed metalheads are either super open minded and listen to all sorts of stuff or they only listen to metal and there isnt a whole lot of in between

especially when i go to shows in atlanta ill meet people who literally only listen to like, one subgenre of a subgenre and its so weird. like bro you're 32 and you only want to hear death doom?

I've met some people who are like that, too but most of the metal fans I've met have eclectic tastes. Actually, back in the day, it was a metal head who got me into Fleet Foxes. XD
