Easy 5.
I listened to it a few times just to make sure it was still a 5. Still a 5.

you have a point altertide0, you prefer a more free sound, improvisation, I prefer a more dense orchestration. I have yet to listen more times the Ascension album more times. Most probably if it is a big band instrumental album he took inspiration from "The Sinner". I like all the records by Coltrane.

The first two tracks are truly one of the best things I've ever heard in music. I can't say the same for the other two.

ya alter speaks truth
but for me, improv doesn't necessarily strike me as being more emotionally affective than arranged pieces. I think that's more determined by how they play their instruments.

of course, either or are very valid approaches to music or what have you. in my experience, they generally achieve and aim for different things, but they don't necessarily have to.

I don't think that's what jazz should be about (we have classical for that after all)
genres don't make music
but I was never a fan of (non-modern) classical anyway, the harmonies, however complex (I like complex) could never touch me as much as dissonance, they're too perfect, too "super-human" to move me.
tried renaissance music?
The big reason I dig this album is that it's the first jazz album that truly feels like an orchestral piece.

"genres don't make music"
true. it's just that usually when you think about jazz you think about improvised/jam music just like when usually when you think about classical you think about composed music. although these are only stereotypes, i'm aware of that. so:
"tried renaissance music?"
see above. but seems interesting, i'll certainly try, thank you.

p. meaningless stereotypes too, shouldn't judge an album based on what it's 'supposed' to sound like, though i do get ur point of view

For you improvised it's better, for me it isn't, because the simple logic that classical music has, the greatest music is like a huge building made by an architect, all is planned, keys related to each other like a river flowing, of course many of that coposition comes from improvisations, so impros are a undeveloped pieces of music compared with the whole composed piece, that's my approach. A great composer has a great improvisation skills, Mingus had that gift too "altertide0", just look for the album "Mingus plays piano - Spontaneous Compositions And Improvisations"
Great classical composers did a lot of improvisation too.
For me this album takes the cake for the all-time greatest.

Agreed.

there's still the feeling of being in the moment while listening to improvised music that is undeniably thrilling, but because mingus is such a talented improviser as well as composer, the difference to me is negligible
