Come on Heartache bangs they should do an EP of sappy alt-country twang songs I'd be in for it

the songs that remind me of it off gregs solo album were good at least. no peace of mind to rest and guest in your house rule

“I’m afraid I love someone / who’s in love with someone else / for years I’ve kept it to myself”
have their lyrics really ever been any better than this?

maybe marginally but this album is good because it has nice found design and effective catchy songwriting, not because it’s super profound or anything

Just out of curiosity, what lyrics of off OtIP are bad?

the obituaries stands out the most in a bad way, but tbh i am not a fan of the lyric writing on good things at all really. either way way too vague or way too specific that it ends up feeling vague for its own good

Hmm, I'd agree that the chorus of The Obituaries is a bit on the nose, but outside of that the lyrics are quite eloquent. As for Good Things, I see what you mean, but I think it works really well as a mission statement for the whole album (also works amazingly live).
The “I’m afraid I love someone / who’s in love with someone else / for years I’ve kept it to myself” thing is just drab and sounds like an emo-pop line from the mid 00s.

i think it works as a mission statement of the album but in a way thats fairly reflective of the extent that album has grown off me recently
def think the writings a step above the new songs tho that are like only about heartache and unrequited love which feel kinda inauthentic considering greg has been happily married for a while now lol

Fair enough. I think Hello Exile is when their lyrics got significantly weaker (I Can't Stop Drinking, High School Friend, Farewell Youth in particular sound like self-parody), and the new album seems to be continuing the trend.

farewell youth has great lyrics and actually tells me things about greg barnett the person but agreed regarding the other two

the lyrics in the verses of the obituaries are not eloquent. it’s a bunch of “look how depressed I am” buzzwords that don’t connect with eachother line to line at all
