I'm really enjoying this, the songwriting doesn't stand out a whole ton I guess but their sound is awesome.

Good/interesting songwriting isn't what you're looking for in this kind of thing anyways, it took some time for me to appreciate that though. Like when I first heard Loveless, I didn't love it because the songwriting on it (with the exclusion of a few tracks) is pretty weak but now it's one of my favorite albums.

Did I say something wrong?
Seriously though find me one person who thinks the songwriting is the best part about Loveless.

In terms of songwriting Sometimes is the best so that's not the best example.
I'm not saying the songwriting is bad but if you took away all the noise and stripped the songs down to their bare elements you wouldn't be left with a very impressive set of tunes.
As I said though I no longer find a problem with that aspect, it's just not what the point of that style is.

I'm not saying the intention was to cover weak songs with effects I'm just saying that songwriting is not the primary purpose behind them.
Also while I accept that point about lyrics you can't even hear many of the lyrics on the album so it doesn't really matter whether it has good lyrics or not. And while if you do read the lyrics they're decent (not amazing, though they appropriately reflect the emotions evoked by the music and are in that sense respectable) they're definitely not the primary way in which the songs' emotions are transmitted, as compared to genres like country or folk.

"within that pop context"
Exactly, at the core they're fine pop songs but rarely much more.

Again at this point I've learned how to appropriately appreciate Loveless/shoegaze in general (even if I've still only heard a handful of albums from the genre) but there was certainly a learning curve for me as one who in general connects to music more through songwriting/lyrics as opposed to sound.

Diverted away from the topic of this thread though
Idc that much but some people (**cough cough** Ars) get frustrated when this happens.

"although no one likes the guy who brings up loveless in every tangentially related thread lol"
Is this about that time I mentioned it in the LSD and the Search For God thread?
(I apologize I've only heard like 10 shoegaze albums so Loveless is still my major reference point shoot me if you mus)

True this is definitely noisier as opposed to the hazier atmosphere that I understand is more representative of shoegaze

I totally understand what you're getting at Boney but what makes Loveless so great is the combination of great songwriting in addition to the production/fuzziness. With that being said, it isn't the best in songwriting terms like there's a ton of album better than it on a purely songwriting basis.
