they define themselves as neo crust on their bandcamp, but yeah I'd more readily lump them in with screamo

This leans more to screamo

Crust leans more to grindcore/extreme metal

its derived from hardcore punk with some metal elements, developed in England in the 80s. tbh in my experience it has lots of parallels with screamo anyway

also yeah Crust leans more to grindcore/extreme metal [2]

From what of heard of neocrust, it has a very specific guitar tone, it's not quite sludge but it's similar. Got some d-beat in there and shit

I'm totally a genre nazi but I think a lot of screamo bands can also be classified as crust. Both genres can be amazing so who cares if it's this or that when it's all good shit.

I don't think there's enough metal in this or most screamo to call it crust. I mean it can occasionally sound like crust or even black metal the way they often move octaves all around the neck of the guitar for melodies, but the grooves they ride are often a lot different and the guitar tones n riffs are too.

Crust riffs sound "tougher", are lower on average, use powerchords a lot more, and have occasional noodly bits that come from metal. Plus it's hardly crust without a good d-beat, which none are really on this. Crust bands lean towards straight 4/4 feel a lot, and screamo bands lean more towards a bouncy swing or triplet feel.

I'm conservative enough to believe that crust should have a special lyrical and overall theme

Yeah, that too. Though I wouldn't call it a hard rule.
