It's also their most overrated, although that doesn't
seem to be a popular opinion lately.

Interesting to note that no one seems to hate on post-
MoP 'Tallica more than I do.

Black Album seems overrated to a lot of those who weren't there when it came out and it's very understandable. Coming after a four album run, it is a big change. So if one listens to Metallica's discog for the first time now, it's reasonable the he won't find much to love on Black Album especially if he is a thrash fan.



On the other hand, even though musically it's excellent, its historical significance is huge and this might score more points for people who were around. At the time it seemed a larger than life album and for me it still is. You have great songs, incredible production and two awesome ballads in there. In Sput it's not so overrated imo with an avg. rating of 3.7. I'd say it's a bit underrated.

The Black Album is the album that single-handedly got me into the world of hard rock/metal. It was my favorite album in the world for like a year, then I moved on. Looking back on it, the black album still has a special place in my heart, but it doesn't hold up well for me. It can be really strong at times and the musicianship on the album is top-notch, but quite a few of its tracks are pretty damn lackluster as well. Overall it's a good album, but doesn't hold a candle to the first four. If anything, it scores high on the nostalgia meter.

I think 3.7 is a fine rating for it. I always thought the main problem with the Black Album was its length. Most of the songs were great, just they flowed poorly in the context of a full album. Only greatest of metal elitists wouldn't be thrilled to hear any track off of it live.
