"Don't like the kinda shrill flute (or sax? Not sure), kinda kills the song for me. Plus it's like a dreary funeral march musically until the second half."

on to proper commenting; Jon Hassell's electronically-modified trumpet is a bit taxing when its quality is that of a dying fly buzzing 'round your head, but the way he uses it against the ethereal synthesis is what makes his style work in the mold that Sylvian wanted for the second half of the album. Not to say it isn't dreary, but I feel like that is a part of Sylvian's style although there is a healing quality to his music, cathartic to sum it up.

The addition of Jon Hassell makes this album perfect. The trumpet doesn't sound annoying, in fact the exact opposite; it evokes calm and peaceful dreamlike serenity.

No matter how it's used composition wise if I don't like how it sounds then I can't bring myself to enjoy it.

Happily surprised to have found this CD at a record store for only like $7 during my xmas vacation in Utah. The First Day as well. "The Ink in the Well," "Nostalgia," "Weathered Wall," and the t/t are amazing.

"Nostalgia" is the business. So this album a cogent point of departure from Japan?

Kinda plays as the bridge between Tin Drum and his solo work (Pulling Punches definitely feels like a Japan track)
it's also his "cocaine" album, very moody, estranged and detached. He was knee deep in an addiction during this time although he was clean by the time Gone to Earth came around, I believe. So this is kind of the odd man out concerning his records.

Nice, I'll check Tin Drum before going any further. Gonna chew over this a little more first

Have at it. Gentlemen Take Polaroids and Quiet Life are also great records - Ryuichi is on a track on the former as well. Big note: Ryuichi is present on a lot of Sylvian's stuff as well up until Dead Bees on a Cake.
