I love every song on here but The Downtown Lights is their best. That outro is incredible.
Boney you have comments on the first page of this review from almost 3 years ago, sayin the same shit about speculating if you should try it or not haha

This is timeless to me but I get the '80s vibes each time I listen, in a good way.

I shouldn't be surprised since Doof often cites it as one of his favorite songs ever but "Let's Go Out Tonight" is a true stunner.
On the 80s thing, it's not necessarily a judgment on quality, I just find that 80s albums frequently have a very distincive quality (super smooth synths/guitars/vocals, electric percussion, slightly cheesy overall sound) that sometimes takes me some time to get acclimated to. In this case though the composition is definitely strong, it's just taking some time to grow on me because the first thing I heard was just mega 80s cheese.

personally don't notice any 80s cheese on here
"super smooth synths/guitars/vocals, electric percussion" that just describes a lot of good music in general, plenty of 90s and later bands that have perfected that winning formula too

Yeah you can find that stuff in later decades too I just think it's especially pronounced in poppier 80s stuff. Some stuff like this just sounds so clinical and sterile and so hearing stuff with this sound triggers that reaction from me.

There's cheesy pop found in all decades, but the most popular of it was probably in the '80s, which is why they're associated together. It also found many artists having that "super smooth synths/guitars/vocals, electric percussion" qualities that Boney mentioned.
The more artsy, organic side of '80s pop like this, Talk Talk, Tears for Fears, Kate Bush, Peter Gabriel, early Sting, some David Sylvian, Avalon by Roxy Music, Prefab Sprout, etc. manage to distinguish themselves as unique and transcend the dated or cheesy elements found in that decade imo

To the extent that I'm familiar with those artists, yes I generally agree, it's just as I mentioned my immediate gut reaction to that kind of stuff is to be turned off by the slickness.
