it's their best imo

although 'Peace At Last' might be creeping up into 2nd now

Drifter - what's your favourite?

Also: I had to pay to download but the 'lost' 1993 album ('House for Sale') by It's Immaterial finally released in 2020 (recorded at the same studio at nearly the same time as 'Hats') is really really good. Has a very similar sound to The Blue Nile.

Think that one's overall the best It's Immaterial album, real surprise gem.

Mine would be Peace At Last. It's my most listened at just over 800 and the next most played is Rooftops and Hats at just over 400 each. My most played song from them is Body and Soul at like 85. It's such a beautiful record and some of the b-sides are among their best work - see Wish Me Well, Turn Yourself Around.

It's such a unique album to me I don't think any record that sounds like it could resonate with me like it does. Probably because of Paul but it's just incredible. All their albums are, I could say the exact same thing about all of them.

PAL took some growing on me compared to the instantness of their first two, and considering how different it is it's also kinda remarkable how much I love it after first falling in love with their first two. I guess it probably appeals to my tastes more. Tomorrow Morning through Family Life minus Holy Love is probably my single most repeated stretch of music ever and also probably the best. Happiness is incredible too but I often start with TM because of how instant it is.

tl;dr Peace At Last is amazing, along with all their other stuff

However, I would say that this is probably their most consistently amazing followed by High.

Yeah all four albums are essential.

‘Sentimental Man’ might just be my second favourite song by them now, that one grew on me a lot this last year.

That whole first half of Peace At Last is nothing short of breathtaking, I wouldn't blame any picks. Sentimental Man has been my choice from it for the past few months but they've all had that place at one point or another. I think that song stands out among the others in its own way and I really appreciate the lyrics and titular phrase.

I feel like High gets even less appreciation than Peace At Last which is a shame because I think it's their most realistically human record.

I saw someone call Rooftops your first love, Hats your first break up, and Peace At Last your divorce. But I don't necessarily agree with the PAL summation I look at it as the ups and downs of a strong relationship and then High could easily take the final place as the divorce album but that wouldn't be right either.

The first 3 have this really up in the air quality to them with lovely fantasies and pretty imagery, even through the sad stuff. But High (ironically) is the Real Life album.

Just look at some of the lyrics to the album, particularly Broken Loves, what a gorgeously depressing yet oddly uplifting song.

I feel exactly like a matchstick in relation to you
Thin and broken
And nothing I can seem
Make you switch the TV off
And look up
Look up

yeah, you sort of overtook me on both I guess - I've had to go back and start filling in some gaps and reassessing a few albums I dismissed back then.

I actually think 'High' is a bit more consistent than 'Peace', only 'Peace' has four or five absolutely phenomenal songs on there that'd all make my personal top 10 tracks from the band

Definitely. High is for sure more consistent and kind of a summation of their career so I really appreciate it for a number of reasons.

Apparently Taylor swift sings about “the downtown lights” on her new album.
