Thomas Haake and Sean Reinhart are both excellent metal drummers that tastefully use them. Physical Education on the last AAL album also made them an integral part of the song. I fucking love ghost notes, but they can be over done.

I feel like you can't listen to just one song from an AAL album, and that's especially true with this one. Maybe that was their intention with the songs sounding similar here.

Periphery's drummer uses ghost notes all.the.time. 2:00 onwards in their song "Omega" is the best example I can give, ghost note city. "Nostrum" by Meshuggah also has ghost notes throughout the whole song pretty much.

I'm consciously trying to cut down on my use of them at the moment but I'm a very groove-oriented drummer so it's kinda hard.

Weightless + JOM = This

album has nice grooves, interesting song writing, but still lacks that holy s%$# wow factor the s/t had. This is pretty much Weightless 2.5 Overall enjoyable album and like it very much.

seems like most of the metalcore influence of the past records is replaced by classical technicality

Agreed. TJoM started it off, and I don't see them as a metal band anymore, but that's no bad thing.

probably because the band is 7-8 years old now.

Tosin and company outdid themselves again! I love the diversity on the album a whole lot. I thought the Joy of Motion was beyond awesome, but Animals as Leaders just gave us a new pinnacle to marvel at.

At first, this album felt like a pretty huge departure from their previous sound, but now it just sort of feels like AAL doing their thing. It's not as amazing as it could have been, but it's still very consistent and enjoyable.

I feel like Joy of Motion was definitely more entertaining and fun but this is a bit more technically impressive.

"I don't see them as a metal band anymore"

Eh, that's prog-metal for you. They're no less metal than, say, Dream Theater.

Fair point, I prefer to see a band evolve anyway! To be honest, assigning genres to bands is a complete waste of time - seems to lead more into an argument about status rather than what they sound like and triggers the elitists into circle-jerks and/or bitching.

For real the drumming on this album is incredible. People need to accept it's not Tosin's band anymore, it's a collective effort. Javier, Matt, and Tosin's parts are all equally important. No way should the drums have to take a backseat

Honestly I think at this point most people are glad to see that be the case. If we had that feeling on Weightless, I forreal think that album would be fucking perfect.

Weightless was better than the S/T I think because of that.

Not gonna neg you or anything but why knock the "genre" as arrogant and not explain why? Is the works you're looking for "pretentious"? "Dense"? I suppose you could make the argument that pretentiousness could be arrogance but I think that would be a stretch. It's not like the band is full of themselves as far as I can tell. On that note, is the genre you're speaking of prog? Djent? Both?
