It's pop music. Not any prog trace to be found, but Annie is singing like an angel.

"Not any prog trace to be found, but Annie is singing like an angel."

Oh, I can see. Despite Annie has an angelic singing but as any kind of prog trace cannot be found on those workings, I'm really not be very enthusiastic by that kind of pop stuff, right now.

Thanks for your explanation Jethro.

I am a huge Renaissance fan, old enough to have bought Novella when it was originally released. I honestly did not pay too much attention to it as it does not compare favorably to their best work, but your review definitely made me curious and I will listen to it again. Great review, btw.

Thanks, EBM.

I agree with you, "Novella" isn't so good as their best albums, "Prologue", "Ashes Are Burning", "Turn Of The Cards" and especially "Scheherazade", for my taste. However, "Novella" can be considered their last classic album, despite the good quality of their next album "A Song For All Seasons", which can be considered a transitional album.

I haven't listen often to ''A Song For All Season''. If memory serves well, the t/t is an epic prog rock track, and the rest is pretty much straight folk rock, is that it? I will give it another spin. Prologue is another album I have to revisit.

“A Song For All Seasons” is a transitional album where the band started to flirt with more pop oriented material. “Closer Than Yesterday”, “Back Home Once Again” and their big hit “Northern Lights” are really pop songs. Still, the album also featured enough lengthy progressive epics and symphonic arrangements to make it worth a listen. “Day Of The Dreamer” and the title track are two complex songs that more or less maintained the Renaissance’s sound of the good old days. “Opening Out” has a beautiful melody and “Kindness (At The End)” is also quite good. The album really marks the end of an era but it deseves our attention yet, especially as a prog fans.

"Prologue" is a very good album, one of their classics, still not good as their best.

''The album really marks the end of an era''

Yes indeed, considering it was released in 1978, the year of Tormato, And Then There Were Three and Giant for a Day, where the downhill of prog has clearly begun.

Album A Song For All Seasons is quite symphonic and better than I thought. My least favorites have to be ''Back Home Once Again'' and ''She Is Love'', but still, they fit in the context of the album. ''Northern Lights'' is really catchy and is like ''Carpet Of The Sun II'', and ''Opening Out'' would not be out of place in Ashes Are Burning too. The vocal harmonies and the melody of ''Kindness'' are similar to the ones on ''Kiev'' from Prologue. Anyway, thanks for your precisions, they made me want to listen to the album sooner. Now, let's go back to Prologue.

Cheers, buddy.

Yeah, but fortunately, even when a Renaissance's album is weaker and less prog than it must be, we have always the extraordinary and unique voice of Annie.

But one of these days I'll review "A Song Of All Seasons" too.

Cheers too, buddy.
