academy - this is way more 'fuller sound 2010's pop', even her vocals sound like they've been blandified to me and I guess that's where I got the Charli XCX thing, there's a common vocal sound for every female pop star right now.

oh well damn, I was hoping it would be a nice split of the 2 or a combination
gonna listen tonight most likely

I'll simplify - her voice sounded interesting on the debut, it now sounds really boring.
Reason: worse fuller bland pop arrangements
Honestly listen to 'Someone New' and then listen to 'Mother Earth' and tell me the vocals on the latter don't sound way more bland and lacking in melodic intonation by comparison
Now listen to 'Waiting Game' and then listen to something like 'Trainwreck' - the former has a uniqueness, an identifiable sound. The latter sounds generic, flat and uninspired.

you just can't listen to something like 'fuck with myself' and be like, 'man I really wish the vocals were less bland' tho

wwf the vocals on that are more bland than before, just because she lays on 'the sexy' super thick it isn't washing with me - if that's the lead song on this album that's damning, it does nothing much of interest

it's one of the best songs of the year. the subdued vocals and how they interact with the beat is what makes the song

The put on dumb dumb 'duh-duh-fuck-wiv-ma-self' in the verse comes out of left field a bit and end up a bit 'I'm wacky me'
It's an ok tune, it's not blowing me away
Sorry, this album I'm marking down as a vocal talent slumming it, it's not my baby.

Mind Games is a gem, she definitely CAN sing, but tbh a lot of this is bland or tries to be "quirky" (Fuck With Myselfs weird chorus) and ends up being irritating.

Ed I'd never argue she can't sing, she most certainly can, but I don't think this style showcases her voice anywhere near as well as her first EPs/singles which were more minimal and vocally melodic (rather than more rhythmic as people have suggested they have become here)

I find this similar to how I feel about The Weeknds BBtM from last year.
