"seems that prog-rock Opeth gets a lot of crap because people miss the growly ol' days"

I don't think that's the case at all os. It might have been for Heritage/Pale Communion sadly, but most people have moved on. This gets flak because to many it has horrible production /silly oversinging /weak heavy sections/ feels uncharacteristically emotionally disconnected and/or impassive and/or dispassionate, among other reasons.

the fuzzy and sterile production feels like a feature for me...whole record is definitely a bit dissociated for sure - not that it was necessarily "intentional" or anything, but definitely contributes to a unique vibe when I listen.

(probably still my least favorite post-Watershed, but I like it haha)

I would like some specific moments that fall under "silly oversinging" tbh. I guess my tastes just give everything a pass

Production here is bad, brickwalled to hell.

Trifo and Pleb know

Their worst to date but has its moments: the softer/folkier sections as has been stated already. The songs from this album that they play on Garden of the Titans are an improvement imo

'I get the high rating. seems that prog-rock Opeth gets a lot of crap because people miss the growly ol' days.'

It's definitely some other things too, like Trif said most people have moved on by this point. Heritage is unfairly maligned and that one may be suffering a little from being the first post-growl era Opeth release. In Cauda is flawed on occasion but I enjoyed it a lot, the band captured a sense of fun and quirkiness that I personally feel is missing on this (and PC). The production certainly doesn't help, as the songs here did admittedly sound better live.

If ever you feel like your takes are hot, just remember that Sea of Tranquility rated this as the best Opeth album

SoT is a famous YouTuber who reviews metal and prog records and ranks their discography. And he ranked most of Opeth’s post-Watershed stuff really high

He ranked Europe’s Walk The Earth as their second best album, when it’s widely considered to be their worst

This is very true too. Which shows it has to do with production and lack of enthusiasm in the execution on the studio version.
