"Periphery has pretty much become a meme at this point"
they were already for a long time in my book
| | | Periphery is one of those bands that lovers of black metal tend to get off on (just a little too much) hating and also being unnecessarily hateful towards anyone and everyone that has ever expressed even a slight, itty bitty preference for metal songs written in a major key signature along with polyrhythms. They seem to get angry over the songs not having 100% angry vibes/lyrics or minor key. When one of these people hear a vocalist singing a note instead of growling it, they instantly declare "Fuck that shit!" and generalize it all as crap. I find these morons completely boring, redundant, unpleasant, annoying as shit, and nowhere NEAR as capable at songwriting as say, Periphery. That said, I find it delightful when I come across legitimate reviews such as the above that actually give an adults reasoning behind not liking something. Thank you. You are the first Periphery naysayer I have ever respected. As for me, I love Periphery, and I love the poppy vocals. I also love progressive death metal such as The Faceless, and also opera. I just wish I could find one other person that is like that.

This album is pretty inconsistent, but I guess I'm getting used to that with Periphery. They have always put out albums with a few good songs amidst a bunch of filler. But I have that problem in general with music right now - it's rare for most albums to deserve their length. Most albums would be well served by having their run times cut in half, and creating a trend of putting out quality over quantity. Periphery loves quantity.
That being said, there are quite a few songs I like on here, and I'm at the point where I really don't mind skipping songs as long as I have at least, say 5 songs from an album that I like. Sure, you can get used to filler and like some aspects of it after repeated listens, but for me I prefer to cut the shit and just listen to the highest quality songs that artists can put out. Spare me the tracks where they dial it in.
Umm, to be specific about Periphery... they should stop trying with guitar solos. Their solos are pretty crummy. But there are a lot of catchy moments on the album, and Spencer's screaming is getting pretty good. But yeah, maybe they should try going poppier, because their progressive/heavy stuff sounds uninspired most of the time.
Also - Absolomb destroys. Great tune.
