He mentioned in an interview that he had enough songs for an album after melancholie, but he wasn't happy with the material. Most of this album was written in a cabin in the woods in 2014, when he finally found the inspiration he was looking for. So it wasn't really eight years for this album, that's just how long it took for him to write and record something he was truly happy with.

just wait until you hear nightfall and escape II. I love the whole thing, but think the second half is better. climax of sorrow is great too, has the best harsh vocals on the album mixed with some nice serene sections

None of the songs stick out as weak to me. This has been a consistently solid listen over and over again. I'm sure I'll pick least favorites at some point, but right now I'm just soaking (lol) in the greatness.

dnno bro's, Throane, Titaan and Almyrkvi left me with an even bigger impression so far.
This album is really bloody good on a first listen though.
