Yes, I wish he would have collaborated a bit more on the prequels. But I also understand him wanting to take all aspects into his own hands and craft it the way he wanted.

"Well no one bats an eye when a Scorsese film has a 15 min dialogue scene with two people sitting at a table... Guess that doesn't really work for STAR WARS"

It's definitely a matter of expectations. George designed the prequel trilogy in a way that deliberately shunned the OG trilogy. Problem is, most wanted more of the OG trilogy, so there was backlash. People expect that kind of shit with Scorsese because he has always done things that way and has no intention of changing. Whereas Lucas always wanted each trilogy to be completely different from the others.

The OG trilogy was meant to be a classic Space Opera in the style of Japanese Jidaigeki films, specifically those by Akira Kurosawa like Yojimbo.

The Prequel trilogy was meant to be a mixture of high Medieval storytelling reminiscent of classic poetry and literature of the Middles Ages, combined with the Science Fiction Pulp Novels of the 1910's and 20's.

His unmade Sequel Trilogy was meant to be a philosophical and psychoanalytical exploration into the concepts of life, the universe, and fate; which hearkened back to his earlier philosophical film THX 1138 and the more iconoclastic movies of the late 50's Franch New Wave movement.

too bad what we got were bloated, wooden, lifeless, cgi overload films that are severely lacking real stakes and thrills aside from an interesting narrative, some memorable scenes here and there, and an ensemble cast

Funny enough I feel this way about Episodes 2 and 3, but I don't feel this about 1. Mostly because I felt like George was really invested in how he presented 1 in regards to his vision of Star Wars, whereas 2 and 3 were more or less changed dramatically due to the backlash against Episode 1.

Episode 1 was shot on film. 2 and 3 were digital. The visual difference is noticable.

What I would give for a Lucas "sequel trilogy" with good directors to realize the vision. I wanted to see Luke training a new small group of Jedi. Rey and Kylo could still be in it. Kylo obviously turning to the dark side throughout the sequel trilogy

There are some cool sequences in 1.

Fuck tho I remember being like 7 years old and when jar jar entered the frame for the first time you could feel the life sucked out of the theatre.

The hype for 1 was unreal. Probably the most hype for any movie I've ever experienced.

It made sense to me, but the problem was Obi-Wan didn't have the wise man energy that Neeson's Qui-Gon had, which had the later two films feeling empty.

I would have liked to see maul go into episode 2 at least. Instead of dooku.

But now we have the movie Solo and maul is back. Hahahaa

Here's hoping cause yeah Solo was underrated, but that's primarily because it had Ron Howard as a director, who is extremely close to George Lucas and knows his style more than any other director around right now. That movie is very "Lucassian" as I call it.

Also I honestly understand why George chose to do the Prequel trilogy himself as opposed to what he did with the OG trilogy. The thing about the OG trilogy was that he had absolute power in how his story was played out. Irvin Kershner was George's film College professor and Irvin was already a fan of George's idea for Episode 5. Richard Marquand was a young upstart in the industry who George picked knowing Richard would let Lucas walk all over him. He had 0 clout in the industry at that point and was unwilling to step on George's toes in return for directing a film that would put his name on the map.

Times have changed though, directors are now far more unwilling to be told what to do in regards to the films they make. Take the new Disney series for example. Gareth Edwards had 40% of his original Rogue One film reshot by Tony Gilroy because he had no help in regards to how to make the film. Colin Trevorrow openly refused to let Kathleen control his vision for Episode 9 and was kicked out. The same thing happened with Solo, where Phil Lord and Chris Miller refused to let Kathleen dictate the tone of Solo, so she booted them out and replaced them with Ron Howard.

George knew that no director at that time would allow George to watch over their film's development like a hawk like he did in the late 70's and early 80's, so he did it all himself. Independent films were beginning to gain more attention and traction in the mid-90's so young upstart directors didn't need to leech off of popular franchises to hit it big. Even more so now with the internet being as big and widespread as it is now.
