The review is not well written, especially coming from a "Staff" member. Grammatical and punctuation errors abound. The structure is faulty.

I agree that Lateralus is overrated, but it is definitely not a 2. The whole "The Grudge rip-off" thing is ridiculous. Lateralus (the song) sounds nothing like The Grudge. Nor does The Patient. Similar structures, perhaps, but rips-off? Might as well say every verse-chorus-verse-chorus-bridge-chorus song rips off all others of its ilk. This Message Edited On 05.16.09

This review is skrewed up. This album is fucking genius. And what the hell was that giant section about Tool being so full of

themselves? It's a gimmick, yes, but lots of bands do it. And Tool is a good enough band to pull it off.

I know that you didn't completely slam Tool here, but 90% of your review was clearly biased. You even said yourself that you don't like the band. I could write a review talking about how I think Britney Spears's music sucks because I don't like her, but I choose not to because I have better things to do with my time. Or I could write a review about a band I do like (even if its about an album by that band that I don't think is good). I'm not a Tool fanboy so I don't think that they're TH3 B3ST BAND 3V4R ZOMG, but I do have enough sense to recognize that they are an incredibly talented band.

I also think it's interesting that you say you like King Crimson's work but dislike the song "Reflection" because it is too repetitive. "Reflection" is probably one of the most King Crimson influenced songs, it has that repetitive poly-rhythmic sound that was so apparent on Beat, Two of A Perfect Pair, and some songs off of Discipline.

I never actually bothered to read this review when it was originally written, but reading it now, it's comes across as amateur in it's construction and shallow in it's understanding of some of the musical elements it tries to critique. It's actually amazing to see how far this site has come since it's early days, people have improved dramatically as writers and it seems that people are listening to a lot more music. Most of those who have been since that time have matured a lot in their tastes and understanding of music, and it's really cool to look back and see that growth

really? i mean really? ok i can see the similarities between some songs but creating a new genre of music cant be done with 1 song. When u r playing smthing so exeptional and unique do u thing it takes one song to establish it? Pink Floyd had similarities in their songs, system of a down have similarities, Led Zeppelin and many ather unique bands. Also about the pretentious thing, i think its the ather way around. They can do things with music noone else can, like slice the parts of the song in fibonacci friquence which, if u had been familiar with math u would have probably known ,leads geometricaly in to an eternal spiral. Being both a Scientist and a musician i can tell u it rly is remarkable. There is nothing pretentious about saying we can do smthing noone can, here is your proof.A bit cocky yes but not pretantious. And the lyrics, of what u call a rip off, lateralus " I'm reaching for the random or whatever will bewilder me,whatever will bewilder me.

And following our will and wind,we may just go where no one's been.

We'll ride the spiral to the end and may just go where no one's been. " is what an artist and a scientist have in common.

Rio Bravo1023, how can you possibly be a really big tool fan and never heard opiate or salival, maybe you meant to say you're just a really big tool. As for this review of one of the best albums of said decade, its well written but he keeps stressing how much he dislikes it then follows this with lines like "a solid song" "one of the better songs" "very interesting" "make your mouth drop to the floor", you listened to an album you don't like 20 times come on guy, admit you love it, like all the rest of us. Oh and about the filler they probably just do that to differentiate and purposely alieanate from said bands mentioned.
