with all due respect daggerfall, there is plenty of point in making music even if it doesn't appeal to anyone. your comment suggests music is made for an audience, or worse that its made as a product for consumption. tool aren't a government or a business: even if everyone else on earth died they would still make this music because they want to, they get a thrill out of challenging themselves and finding out what it's about to exist. people seem to think that being intelligent is wrong or something. if you don't want to engage in deeper meanings of stuff then why are you even bothering with tool. lou reed is for the most part boring, unartistic pop.

Tool calling nu-metal is ridiculous. They aren't nu-metal, but they aren't fully progressive neither. I see them as a kind of hardrock band which has nu-metal and progressive traits.
Sure, Tool and The Mars Volta are "progressive" in comparsion too the mainstream, but in reality they are simply just rock and roll bands that add a few bells and whistles too their sound.
In reality? You mean, when compared to oldschool progressive like King Crimson and Pink Floyd.
You better watch out as your taking a place right before the fanboys, you started out cool and opinion-defended but you're becoming more biased and close-minded.This Message Edited On 09.12.06

No, I mean progressive in comparsions too any progressive band out right now.
I'm not being biased and close-minded.
You guys are just using the same excuses, that the review already defended.

BTW, if you don't like Lateralus lyrics, that's fine. Maybe I'm just close minded and stupid, but take a look at lyrics from 10k days, especially Rosetta Stoned. That's some really outstanding writing there. I wouldn't call Elliot Smith and Isis better lyricists than Tool. It's not that Elliot Smith is bad, but his lyrics are quite simplistic. Isis on the other hand have some outstanding lyrics, but only a few since they barely use vocals. It's more about the music with them. This Message Edited On 09.16.06

Well, I was amazed someone thought so little about Lateralus until I saw the reviewer's tastes. Figures.
Good review. Sort of provided an iconoclastic viewpoint to balance out the 3689328690328902 other near-fellating reviews.

I find it ironic that you hate Keenan's lyrics, as his lyrics are considered to be among the best among rock as a whole. (I even hate Tool too, and I'm saying this.)

Well, they are very good indeed, but really not the best. Pixiefanyo was right at that point. I'm still trying to figure out why this band is not progressive, hell, even Dredg second CD "El Cielo" was considered progressive.

It is overdone. So overdone that it turned out to be incredibly boring and not fun to listen to at all.

A long winded bulls hit review. You slag off what is a modern classic, nothing like this album has been written before, it is a blue print that every prog rock album for the next 50 years will follow.
A massive thumbs down, dude, I thought you were cool.

Were you expecting it to be fun? I could fall asleep listening to this album, or anything by Tool in that matter. I agree with the review and chan 100% here.
Fyi, Tool is Hard Rock with Progressive traits, imo. Hardly metal, or even alternate metal. This Message Edited On 02.26.07
