Nah I don't hear it at all. Even on previous albums where the mix was super dense you could hear the flash and complexity in his playing.

The songs sound pretty open and bare bones here so I feel like not having super complex drumming to take the songs up a notch is a missed opportunity.

I'm not sure if I dig or not the similarity between Stranded and Only Pain's intro.

Well, both kill, it's just I'm not sure if that's in the absence of a better idea, or because there was needed to be a connection.

Mario turns out yet another great performance, dude is a beast behind the kit.

Seems a good album but I don't expect to like it so much, i'm getting older for metal I think :P

I honestly think their last LP was better than this, but I still found myself enjoying the hell out of Magma. "Pray" is stunning.

L'Enfant Sauvage is easily better. I gotta give this a few more listens though.

First thoughts are... not horrible, not terrific.

Nice review. I'll feature it in a day or so. So, it turns out that I've never heard this band before. Is this a good place to start?

i feel like this might grow on me, though not that much

drums are thoroughly unimpressive tho, and i agree with bloc that the more bare mixing makes it painfully obvious the lack of interesting fills

Start on from Mars to Sirius then it's just a general decline from there

Not sure what to make of this yet. I keep waiting for Gojira to do something that just blows me away cause I feel like the potential has always been there but just...I don't know, they always hold themselves back somehow.

Need more listens but this might be my least favorite from them. Not even any go-to's like Backbone, Flying Whales, Esoteric Surgery or Gift of Guilt.

I'd say The Way of All Flesh is better than FMTS tbh, both rule though

I'm digging this for what it is but they definitely stripped down their sound to the extreme

gotta experiment i guess, imo everytime a band changes sound and start sucking is because they're just not used to the nuances of songwriting in any different style/different production/different genre, they'll get better with practice i think. for now tho, this is just ok

I love L'Enfant, but this is different, they really managed to bring something new to the table. The only songs that I don't enjoy that much are the instrumental interludes. The other 8 songs are all amazing, and Low Lands is probably one of their best songs.

Willie, jam From Mars to Sirius. It's the essential Gojira. From there, do Way of All Flesh (similar jams, but mostly heavier and kinda more repetitive). I don't dig L'Enfant Sauvage, but others do, so it's worth a check. This is better than that and probably a little better than Way of All Flesh for me, though, but is a slower, more gothic feel for them.

The Link is kinda eh (has some cool rhythm sections and ethnic drums) and I've never heard Terra Incognita.

The Link is way underrated imo, Indians and Remembrance especially rule.

A good way to discover Gojira is to follow the chronology but leaving Terra Incognita because of the "bad" production.

The Link is a bit underestimated because it came before the fame, but it's easily their second or third best.
