The vocals spoiled this album for me, frequently reminding me of Dave Grohl's radio friendly, 'passionate' shouting on FF songs like Best of You. The 'epic' choruses in Wake Up and The Long Defeat being the worst offenders. Stay with Me is more shameless and cringey than an Ed Sheehan track.

Yeah, Stay With Me is a bit poopy.

Woah there The Long Defeat is just the right pitch of epic (would possibly agree with you if its lyricism wasn't classic Thrice though; they make the radio look work for them there). Wake Up and Stay With Me are unfortunate though...

I don't care if it's radio rock sounding or not, Long Defeat is just lovely.

Is this as pronounced on their other albums folks? I was mildly irritated by the vocals because I liked the guitar sound a lot, and felt the album was weighed down by them.

his style is a little different in this latest incarnation of the band, yeah, which is probably just a result of how their music has changed. you may like his vocal style on the older albums more.

I dunno, I think he has been doing this vocal style since Beggars, but I would say it is more excessively used on this album.

You may enjoy Beggars or Major/Minor more, but you also might dislike them too.

Hard to say.

I don’t care what anyone says — I know it’s cheesy as hell, but I really like Stay With

Me. Wake Up is indeed terrible though. Long Defeat is alright.

Long Defeat isnt really radio rock-ish to me. Out of all the more radio friendly songs I like Blood on the Sand most. Actually that and Long Defeat are the most memorable to me.

Actually I got The Long Defeat mixed up with Death From Above lol. That one and Blood on the Sand are the ones I like the most.

Still gonna say that I dont think of The Long Defeat as too radio rock-ish tho.

Best songs are Hurricane and Salt and Shadow, easily and without a doubt. The Window and Black Honey are solid as well.

Good album overall. It’s a shame Palms had to be so bland and boring. Only Us, Just Breathe and Beyond the Pines are great though.

Only Us was the only song I actually found to be all that memorable off of Palms. Shame they didnt make the album have more of the retro synth stuff.
